HAMMER OR SLEDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,355, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed November 14, 1903. Serial No. 181,144. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GUSTAV CARLsEN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Port Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers or Sledges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved hammer or sledge which may also be used for the purpose of pulling or drawing spikes, bolts, and large nails; and the invention consists in a hammer or sledge constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a back view of a hammer or sledge made according to my invention; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention Iprovide a hammer or sledge a, having a pole portion a at one end and a projecting and tapered member a at the other end. The hammer a is provided with a transverse bore 6, adapted to receive a handle 0 in the usual manner, and forwardly thereof and formed in the projecting and tapered portion a is a transverse opening (Z, similar to the opening I) and provided with a forwardly-directed extension or recess (Z which is V-shaped or wedge-shaped in form in vertical transverse section and the side portions of which are chambered out, as shown at (Z except at the opposite sides, where the walls thereof are contracted and beveled inwardly, as shown at CZ, to form jaws, which are adapted to grasp and hold the head of a spike. In operating this device as a spike-puller the hammer or sledge is held with the back thereof so that the head of the spike will enter the opening'd. The hammer is then moved backwardly so that the side jaws formed by of the handle 0, the pointed front portion a i of the hammer or sledge forming a fulcrum, and the spike, nail, or other device will be drawn, as will be readily understood.
It will be observed that the part a of my improved hammer is tapered at all sides, and if the clamping-jaws b at one side become worn, so that they will not grasp and hold the head of a spike, the hammer may be turned on the handle 0, and the clamping-jaws d at the opposite side may be used for the purpose of drawing spikes in the manner hereinbefore described.
It will be observed that the opening cl is in line with and parallel with the opening 6, in which the handle 0 is secured, and this is the form of construction which I prefer, although the same may be varied within certain limits without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hammer provided at one end with the usual pole or head, the opposite end thereof being tapered at both the front and the back sides, said hammer being provided with a transverse handle-opening and in the tapered portion thereof with another transverse opening parallel with the handle-opening and having a,
wedge-shaped extension which also extends through the hammer, or through said tapered portion, and the side walls of which are chambered out centrally so as to form clampingjaws at the opposite sides of said tapered portion, substantially as shown and described.
