Description
" H. N.'MALLERY. Horseshoe Hammer.
No. 224,023. Patented Feb. 3, I880.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
HARVEY N. MALLERY, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
HOFiSESHOE-HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,023, dated. February 3, 1880.
' Application filed December 18, 1879.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY N. MALLERY,
of Flint, in the, county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-Hammers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is i a longitudinal sectional view. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to an improved hammer intended more particularly for the use of blacksmithsin manufacturing horseshoes; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of said hammer, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Arepresents the handle, and B the head, of the hammer. One face, 0,
of the latter is of the usual construction-i. 6., fiat or convex, with a smooth or polished surface. The other face, D, is beveled toward the front, and is either serrated or provided with transverse corrugations, as represented in the drawings. v
With an ordinarily constructed hammer great or unusual force is required to sharpen the calks upon a horseshoe, which, during this operation, is held upon the side of the anvil, the end of the tongs resting meanwhile upon the breast of one of the operators.
By my improvement the beveled face of the hammer enables the operator to strike a more direct or square blow, while the serrations or corrugations serve, so to speak, to draw the metal out to a sharp edge or point.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The herein-described improved ham mer, provided with a flat face, 0, and beveled face D, having transverse corrugations, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and speci- HARVEY N. MALLERY.
