UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. LAMBERT, 0F STOUGHTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SI-IQE-TOP PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 29, 1912, Serial No. 693,838. Renewed May 29, 1914. Serial No. 841,959.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY W. LAMBERT, a citizen of the United States, of S toughton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Shoe-Top Protectors,
of which the following is a specification, ref
erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention has reference to improvements in devices adapted to be applied to shoes during the process of their construction to facilitate the handling of the tops, to support and protect the upper edge of said shoe tops and to indicate the number or size of theshoe top or the proposed size of the shoe.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device having one or more of said characteristics as shall hereinafter be described.
The invention consists in such peculiar features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in theclaims.
Figure 1 represents a view of the improved shoe top protector and support se cured to the top of a shoe-in process of con struction. Fig- 2 represents an enlarged sectional view of the same taken on line 22 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a back view of the device, partially broken away. Fig. 4 represents a view in elevation of a modified form of the device.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
As shown in the drawings the improved shoe top protector is formed of compara-i tively stiff leather board or paper bent upon itself to form the inner member 5 and. the outer member 6 having the notch 7 preferably at the lower edge of said member 6. Rotatably mounted on said member 6. by means of the pivot 8 is the disk 9 having printed thereon numbers indicative of the size of the upper or of the intended size of the shoe, the location of said size members on said disk 9 being such that any one of said numbers may be brought to view in the notch. Preferably the protector device is provided with a clamp which has the clamping tongue 10 bent from the slotted shank 11 which is held in frictional contact with Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
. per A, and the last B, a support for the shoe top whereby said top is sustained, but in Fig. 4 Ihave shown the device as preferably used on an Oxford or other low cut shoe. In either case the members 5 and 6 or 5 and 6 are placed over the upper edge of the shoe top C and the clamp is pressed downward to slide into engagement with said members whereby the upper edge of the shoe top is Patented July 28,1914.
frictionally held between said members and is protected thereby from contact with the fingers of the operatives.
By the use of the size indicator disk 9 the size of the upper or the proposed size of the shoe is clearly indicated to the operatives without the necessity of pulling open the top of the shoe.
Having thus described my invention I I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. A shoe top protector having inner and outer members adapted to receive between them the edge of a shoe upper or top, a stud secured to one of said members, and a clamp having a slotted shank slidably engaged with a said stud.
2. A shoe top protector having inner and outer members adapted to receive between them the edge of a shoe upper or top, and a size indicator movably mounted on said outer member.
3. A shoe top protector having integral in ner and outer members adapted to receive between them the edge of a shoe top, said. outer member having an opening, a disk rotatably mounted on said outer member back of said opening and having size numbers, and a clamp for pressing said members into frictional engagement with the shoe top therebetween, substantially as described.
