UNITED STATES PATENT. ()FFICE.
IVILLIAM L. LEIVIS, OF SIVEET SPRINGS, VEST VIRGINIA.
SHEEP-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,332, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed September 1!), 1885. Serial No. 176,732. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. LEWIS, of Sweet Springs, in the county of Monroe and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Sheep-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved protector blanket or coat for sheep or other animals, to protect them from rain, snow, cold, &c.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 shows my improved protector on asheep. Fig. 2isaplan view of the protector, parts being raised.
The protector A, which has about the shape of a horsecoat or covering for animals, such as usually used, is made of oiled sail-cloth, rubber fabric, or any other fabric impervious to water. At the neck part A the side edges at e beveled, to give a better fit, and the neck end edge is concaved slightly. The neckstraps B and B are secured on the neck part A, and the belly-straps O O are secured to the side edges of the protector. On different parts of the protector-that' is, along the edgepieces D,of-canvas, leather, or other suitable materiahare secured, in which groups of apertures E are provided, through which safety pins or holders F,of any well-known construction, can be passed, for the purpose of holding the protector on the animals wool. If desired, thegroups of apertures may be made direct in the covering; but I prefer to use pieces D. A piece, G,ofwater-proof covering, is secured on the top of the covering along the back, and under the same the two pieces H. are secured, one resting on each side of the covering, and serving to shed off the rain, snow, &c. If any snow accumulates on the animals bacl:,it will not rest direct on the covering or protector A, but on the sheets or pieces G and H on said covering or protector. The protector or covering can be secured firmly and snugly on the animal, as it can be pinned on the animals wool along all the edges, and, as numerous pin-holes are provided, the pins can be so placed as to hold the protector or covering to fit perfectly on the animal. One size of covering or protector can thus be used on animals of different sizes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An animal covering or protector provided with groups of pin-apertures at the edges, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. An animal covering or protector having re-enforcing pieces provided with numerous pin-apertures adapted for use in securing the edges of the protector to the animal, substan tially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the covering or protector A, of the neck-straps B B, the bellystraps O O, and the apertured pieces D; secured on the covering at the edges, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the covering or protector A, of the sheets or pieces G and H, secured on the upper surface of the same, the
1 sheets or pieces H hanging down at the sides,
substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM L. LEWIS.
