COMBINED SHOPPING-BAG AND SKIRT-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1906.
Application filed March 13, 1906. Serial No. 305,785.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIROLAMO CoMI, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Cobalt, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Shopping-Bag and Skirt-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of a combined shopping-bag and skirt-holder construction in accordance with my invention; Fig. a reverse side view of the same, showing the device as in use 3, a broken sectional view showing the attachment of the levers to the bag.
This invention relates to a combined shopping-bag and skirt-holder, the object of the invention being to arrange a skirt-holder in connection with a shoppingbag, so that a womans skirt may be conveniently held up and released at will; and the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a shopping-bag 2 of usual construction provided with the usual hook or hooks 8 for suspension from the waist. Connected with one side of the bag near the top isa pair of levers 4. These levers are connected together by a pivot 5, which pivot serves to connect the levers with the bag 2 The levers 4 are provided with suitable handles 6, which preferably project slightly above the upper edge of the bag. These levers 4 are also connected at their lower ends with jaws 7 in such a way that pressing the handles 6 together will open the jaws 7, the lower ends of which project slightly beyond the lower end of the bag. Between the levers 418 a spring 8, the tendency of which is to hold the jaws in the closed position.
Preferably and as herein shown the jaws will be provided with rubber blocks 9, preferably having their abutting edges reversely corrugated, so as to fit into each other. The bag is worn with the skirtholding device against the person, so that only the upper ends of the handles and the lower ends of the jaws are exposed, and preferably the levers i are arranged within the outer covering of the bag, the handles projecting through a slot 10 and the jaws through a slot 11. Thus the skirt-holding device is protected against rubbing on a garment. l Vhen it is desired to hold a skirt in the raised position, it is only necessary to press the handles 6 together, which opens the jaws 7, when the skirt can be inserted between them. Releasing the handles permits the jaws to close upon the fabric and firmly holds the skirt. When it is desired to release the skirt, it is only necessary to again press the handles, which opens the jaws, allowing the skirt to drop.
I claim- 1. The combination with a shoppingbag and means for supporting the same from the belt of the wearer, of a pair of levers pivoted to one side of said bag, said levers formed at their upper ends with operating-handles and connected at their lower ends with grippingjaws, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a shopping-bag and means for supporting the same from the belt of the wearer, of a pair of levers arranged within the outer covering of said bag, said levers provided at their outer ends with a pair of handles exposed outside the bag near the top, and a pair of jaws exposed outside the bag near the bottom, said jaws adapted to be opened by pressing the handles together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereoi I have signed this specification m the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GIROLAMO COMI. WVitnesses D. B. DICKINSON, Lnvr JEWETT.
