Be it kn0wn that I, CHARLES H. STAHL, of WVorcester, in the county 0f \V0rcester und Stute of Massachusetts, have invented (561'- tain new und useful Improvements in Clasps; und I cl0 hereby declare the follow ing t0 be a full, cle2u, und exact description 0f the invention, such 218 will enable others skillecl in the art 110 Which it appertuins 10 make anal use the Same.

This invention relates t0 improvements in clasps such as are adaptnble for use Witl1 gai1nenb supports,- garters etc.,the objcct 0f the invention being to provide a clasp which Will lie comfortably fo1 the W02l1'0l und by means of which the fabric 0f the garment t0 be suppo1;ted can be securely attached thereto without injury t0 the garment; which will lie flat, und which can be easily operated to release the garment without flexing the clasp as a whole of the supporter with which the clasp is connccted.

1 represents the base portion of the clasp which may be macle 0f' sheet metal slightly convexecl ancl is provicled near its respective encls with elon ated slots 23 f01 the passage of the webling 4 0f the supporter. The Webbing 4 is attachecl t0 the end 0f the bzxse 1 adjacent t0 the slot 2 and then passes under said base, over the opposite encl thereof, through the slot 3; then between the base and uncler layer of fabric und finally through the slot 2. If clesired the lower wall 0f the slot 3 may be provided with teeth.

Near its upper encl and at respective sides, the base l is provided with integral bearings 5 for the reception of pintles 6 at the uppe1' ends ol:' the members of a bnil 7. The respective members 0f this bail are curved slightly so that the bnil as a Wh0le Will be somewhut convexed und said buil is of Sulfi cient length t0 project slightly beyond the l0wer end of the base l.

The base 1 is cut in its intermediate portion und the metal turnec1 outwardly to form an elongatecl transversely disposed shoulder 8 t0 coperate with the cross-bar 0f a second bail 9, the arms 0f which are hinged 01' pivotally connectecl with the cross-bar 0f the bail 7. When the bail 9 rests loosely against the shoulder 8, the bail 7 Will be disposed some distance outwardly from the base l, but when the froe encls 0f the bails are pressed toward the base l, the flexibility of the lnen1- bers 0f bail 7 Will permit the two bails to be pressed close to the base 1 und if fabric of the garment to be supported be disposecl between tl1e cross-bar 0f bnil 9 und the shoulder 8 011 the base l, the device Will be clamped securely to said fabric. It will be observed that when the clusp is thus secured to the fabric of the stocking, the pivotal connection between the two bails Will be 011t of nlinement With the pivofal connection 0f tl1e bnil 7 with tll0 lmse 1 und also with lhe slumlde1 8 und thus tl1u clasp will be prevented frmn becuming au w.iclcnlnlly upen. My improvements a1e simple in connection, can be cheaply manufactured und are easy und efficient in operation.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

l. A clasp comprising a base having a shouldex between its ends, a bail pivotally connected with the upper portion 0f said base und of a length su1ficient t0 project below the lower end 0f said base und a second bail pivotally connccted with the 10We1 end 0f the first mentioned bail und adapted to coperate wich the 10We1 sich 0f the shouldol on the base.

2. A clasp comprising {L sheet metal base slightly convexed und having a shoulcler between its ends ancl sl0ts adjacent to its ends, a bail having convexed members pivotally connected with the upper portion of said II1 testimony Whereof, I have signed this base and a second bail pivotally attached to spep1fication in the presence 0f two subthe cross-bar of the first mentioned bail und scr1bing witnesses.
