To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED H. S. SWAN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.

The present invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to the handles thereof, and it has for an object to provide a construction having a supporting hook or projection which is very durable and strong and is inexpensive to manufacture.

To these and other ends the invention con sists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a detail View of a receptacle with the improved handle thereon; Fig. 2 is a section on line aa of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section on line b?) of Fig. 1.

In the embodiment of the invention herein shown the receptacle 1 is a wash boiler or tub with a reinforced rim 2 and has secured to its side wall by rivets 8, or other means, an attaching member or plate 4. The latter 00- operates at its upper edge with the under side of the rim and at an intermediate point is provided with a hollow bearing 5 struck up from the metal of the attaching plate into the form of a horizontally arranged sleeve to receive opposite ends of looped handle 6 permitting the latter to swing on the attaching plate.

Securedto the attaching plate preferably in engagement with the hollow bearing in order that the latter may serve as a support for the same, is a hook member which in the present instance consists of a substantially L-shaped piece formed from sheet material. The upper arm 7 of this piece is curved or turned downwardly and preferably extends through a slot 8 in the attaching plate, while the other arm 9 lies between the receptacle wall and the attaching plate and is engaged by both of said parts in order to be held interlocked with the attaching plate. Preferably the plate is provided with a pocket Specification of Letters Patent.

10 at one side of the hollow bearing to receive the vertical portion of the hook memher and near opposite sides of the pocket the latter may be provided with vertical ribs 11 which engage diverging flanges or portions 12 on the arm of the hook member.

In assembling the parts, the handle portion 6 and the hook member are interlocked with the attaching plate which is then laid against the receptacle and secured by rivets 3 or other suitable means, the parts afterward being dipped in'a galvanizing bath.

The hook member is employed for supporting the receptacle at one side while dumping the contents or operating on the latter and by engagement with the handle bearing sleeve is firmly supported or braced. Its connection with the attaching plate is such that it is securely held to said plate when the latter is secured to the receptacle and the ribs 11 on the plate engage it in such a manner that the flanges are pressed firmly against the receptacle wall and all movement is prevented. As the hook member is separate from the attaching plate it is possible to make the former of thicker or harder ma terial so as to give greater strength.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with a receptacle, of a handle attaching plate secured thereto, and a hook member interlocked with the attaching plate and held against movement and in interlocking engagement with the plate by the receptacle.

2. The combination with a receptacle, of a handle attaching member secured to the wall thereof, and a hook member interlocked with the member and having a por tion cooperating with the wall of the receptacle and the inner side of the attaching member to hold the hook member against movement and interlocked with said attaching member.

8. In a supporting attachment for receptacles, the combination with an attaching member having an opening therein, of a hook member extending through the opening and having a portion cooperating with the inner face of the attaching member and adapted to be held rigidly against movement relative to the attaching member by engagement with a receptacle to which the attaching member may be secured.

member having a slot therein, of a substantially L-shaped member having one arm extending through the slot and the other arm cooperating with the inner face of the attaching member to one side of the slot.

5. In a supporting attachment for receptacles, the combination with an attaching plate having a pocket on its inner face and an opening in a wall of the pocket, and a hook member extending through the opening and having a portion lying in the pocket and adapted to be held rigidly against movement by engagement with the inner face of the attaching member and with a receptacle to which the attaching member may be secured.

6. In a supporting attachment for receptacles, the combination with an attaching plate having a pocket in its inner face and a slot in a wall of the pocket, of a substantially L-shaped hook member having one arm projecting through the slot and the other arm lying in the pocket.

7. In a supporting attachment for receptacles, the combination with an attaching plate having a pocket in its inner face and a slot in a wall of the pocket, of a substantially L-shaped member having one arm projecting through the slot and the other arm lying in the pocket and provided with flanges along its opposite edges.

8. In a supporting attachment for receptacles, the combination with an attaching plate provided with a pocket on its inner face, said pocket having a slot in its wall and also ribs on its inner face, of a hook member projecting through the slot and having a portion lying in the pocket and provided with diverging flanges engaged by the ribs of the pocket.

9. In a combined handle and supporting attachment for receptacles, the combination with an attaching member having a hollow handle bearing and a handle turning in the bearing, of a hook member formed in a separate piece engaging the handle bearing and secured to the attaching member.

10. In a combined handle and supporting attachment for receptacles, the combination with an attaching member having a hollow bearing member and a slot in proximity to the bearing, of a handle turning in the bearing, and a hook member having a portion extending through the slot and engaging the bearing, and also having a portion engaging the inner face of the attaching member.

11. In a combined handle and supporting attachment for receptacles, the combination with an attaching member having a hollow bearing member, a pocket on its inner face to one side of the bearing and a slot in the pocket in proximity to the bearing, of a handle turning in the bearing, and a substantially L-shaped member having one arm extending through the slot and engaging the hollow bearing and the other arm lying within the pocket.
