Be it knowuthat 1, WILLIAM B. MURPHY, of

Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-WVashboards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to washboards,

on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts or features, Figure 1 represents my improved washboard. Fig. 2 represents a section through the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section on theline 3 3 looking in the direction of the arrow.

The said washboard comprises three essentials-to wit, the rubbing-surface,- the soapholder, and the frame. of a metal rod bent to provide the side bars a a and the end bar a. The ends of the side bars are shown as bent backwardor upward, as at a but I have contemplated connecting them by a lower end bar in case the frameis not stiff enough. The rubbing-surface is made of a corrugated plate 17 of zinc or other metal, the lower end of which is swaged or bent, as at b, for stiffness, and the upper end of which is bent rearward and downward, as at 17 for a purpose to be described. The sides of the plate are firmly swaged or bent part way around the side bars, as at 6 so as to tightly grip said bars and yet form no closed pockets for the reception of lint, dirt, or soap. The soap-holder may be constructed in a variety of Ways; but as shown it consists of a metallic frame and a pocket of foramiuous material. a metal rod bent to provide side bars 0 c, the

The body of the soap-holder is made of foraminous material, such as wire-gauze, bent to form a pocket 6 and secured at its upper edge to-the endibar a and at its sides and lower end to the bars 0 0 face formed of a corrugated metallic plate,

and a supporting-frame formed of a metallic rod bent'to provide side bars and an end bar, the edges of said plate being bent around the side bars to secure them together, the corrugations of the plate extending crosswise of the washboard whereby the said plate and frame coact to secure sufficient rigidity with out additional bracing.

2. A washboard comprising aframe formed of a metallic rod bent to provide side bars and an upper end bar, a corrugated'plate having its side edges secured to the said side bars, and a soap-holder connecting the said plate to the said end bar.

Awashboard comprising a frame formed of a metallic rod bent to provide side bars and an upper end bar, a corrugated plate having its sideedges coiled or bent aroundthe side bars, audits upper edge bent'downwardly, andasoap-holder,formed of metal and having its lower end interlockedwith the upper edge of theplate and its upper end coiled or bent around the said end bar,
