IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
w Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,567, dated July 2, 1872.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has forits object to furnish an improved washin g-machine simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, washing the clothes quickly and thoron ghly, and without wearing, tearing, or otherwise injuring them; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described.
Arepresents the box or tub of the machine, which is made rectangular in form and of any desired length, breadth, and depth, according to the amount of washing required to be done by the machine. B are two bars, the rear ends of which are pivoted to the lower part of the sides of the box A, and the forward ends of which are connected by a cross-bar, C, the upper side of which is inclined or beveled off to allow the clothes to pass readily to the rollers. .To the side bars B, at the rear of the cross-bar O, are pivoted two or more rollers, D, against which the clothes are pressed and rubbed by the cylinder E. The cylinder E is preferably ribbed, and its journals work in hearings in the forward ends of two'bars, F,
which extend back along the top edges of the sides of the box or tub A, and their rear ends are pivoted to ears, studs, or brackets G at 'tached to said box A. To the upper sides of the forward ends of the bars F are attached the ends of two springs, H, which extend along the upper edges of the sides of the boxA, and the free ends of which pass through guide-holes in cars or studs I attached to the sides of said box. To the outer sides of the free ends of the pivoted bars F are attached the upper ends of the two bars J, the lower ends of which project below the box A, and have holes formed in them to receive the outer ends of the springs K, the other ends of which are attached to the bottom of the tub A. This construction holds the cylinder E down firmly upon the clothes, and at the same time allows it to yield to accommodate itself to the varying thickness of the clothes being operated upon. The cylinder E is operated by a crank, L, attached to the projecting end of one of its journals.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved washing-machine, formed by the combination of the pivoted frame B C, rollers D, cylinder E, pivoted bars F, springs H, bars J, and springs K with each other and with. the box or tub A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
CLARK TURNER.
