Description
111.1. '1111011111111 WASHING MACHINE.
(Model.)
Patented 0111.11, 1881.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES` PATENT OFFICE.
FLAVIUS DWIGKHAM, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR T EMMA C. WIOK- HAM, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,265, dated October 11, 1881. Application tiled J une 13, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, FLAvIUs L. WIGKHAM, of Racine, Racine county, Wisconsin, have inventedanew and Improved Washin g-Machine,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of washing-machines which are provided with corrugated rollers which are moved back and forth over the clothes; and the invention consists,
ro principally, in making the corrugated roller ofsuch form as to have a pounding as well as a rubbing effect upon the clothes, and thus more rapidly and effectively remove the dirt.
The invention further consists of the frame carrying the roller in combination withy the narrow cover, whereby the roller is allowed to readily adjust itself to the unevenness of the clothes and still be caused to move in a straight line; of the frame carrying the irregular roller 2o in combination with the wash-board bottom of the tub or reservoir and the narrow cover; also of the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
'In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a plan view of my improved Washing-machine.
` Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof on line .r c, Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the corrugated roller, which is journaled in the upright side bars, c a., of the frame; and -B represents the tub or reservoir, which is provided with the wash-board or 3 5 corrugated bottom b. The roller A is of such form that the longer ribs c c, when the roller is forced rapidly back and forth over the clothes, will pound the clothes and at the same time exert a rubbing action upon the clothes between all ofthe corrugations of the roller and the corrugations of the tub or reservoir. The side bars, a c, of the frames, which carry the roller, are bifurcated at their upper ends, and the handle d, which ties the bars together at the top, is hinged at d', and secured to the other sidebar by the removable pin e, so that when the pin is removed theroller may be taken out ofthe frame by oscillating the bars a, which are pivoted to the cross-bars f.
Below the handle d is secured to the side 5o pieces, a a, the cross-barsj`j`, into which the handle E of the frame is secured, and upon the handle may be placed the weights w for adapting the roller to washings ofdift'erent sizes and for washing heavy'as well as light clothing. 55 To the outside of the side pieces, a a, about midway of their length, are placed the hooks or pins cc, which are adapted to catch over the edge of the reservoir for permitting the cover F to be removed or replaced, and for holding the 6o frame and rollerout ofthe way Whilethe clothes are being spread upon the bottom of the tub or reservoir orremoved therefrom. The cover Fis narrower than the tub or reservoir, and narrower also than the frame which carries the roller, and when in place it goes between the side bars, a. a, of the frame, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, and serves to guide the frame and cause it to be reciprocated in a straight line. One end of the cover is provided with tlje crossl 7o piece g, which, when in place, lits in the notches h h, formed in the side boards of the tub or reservoir. The forward end ot' the cover rests `upon cross piece g, which rests in notches h and extends down to the cross-piece), which crosspiece, together with the cross-piecej, permits a wringer to be secured to the tub or reservoir in convenient position for wringing the clothes and for conducting the water from the clothes back into the reservoir. 8o
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The roller A, having long and short ribs, in combination with the side pieces, c a., crossbars f, handle E, cover F, and the reservoir B, 8 5 substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The side pieces, a c, roller A, and pivoted cross-pieces f f, in combination with the hinged handle d and the handle E, substantially as set forth.
