Description

l. W. SPANGLEB & B. F. REICH..
Washing-Machines.
NO 151447. Patented May 26,1874.
'NvEN-VOR,
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB W. SPANGLER AND BENJAMIN F. REICH, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPRovEMENT IN WASHINGMACHINE-s.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151544 Yi dated May 26, 1874 5 application filed November 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that we, JACOB WV. SPANGLER and BENJAMIN F. REICH, of York, in the county of York, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lashing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference 'marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingniaehine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of our washingmachine, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a part of one side of the box.
A represents a rectangular box, of any suitable dimensions, supported upon legs B B, and provided with a hinged lid, C. Iithin the box A are two washboards,-D and E, to work against each other, and rub the clothes between them. The washboard D is attached to. two springs, G G, which are made somewhat in the shape of an S, and their other ends secured to one side of the box A. By means of the springs G G, the wash-board D obtains a backward and downward motion when any pressure is brought to bear on its front side.
' Near each end, on the rear side, is attached a metal bar, a, the upper end of which is, by a hook, b, connected with a plate, d, attached near the upper edge of the box. At the lower end of each bar c is pivoted. an arm, H, the upper end of which is provided with a journal, e, passing through the plate d, and having upon its outer end a loop or clasp, f. Through the two loops f f, one on each side of the machine,is passed a handle, I, by means of which the wash-board E is operated.
By raising the handle I this wash-board ob tains a backward aud downward motion, and by depressing the handle, it obtains a forward and upward motion, so that when clothing is placed between the two wash-boards, and the boardE is moved forward and upward, the board D will be pressed backward and downward, thus producing an excellent rubbing, and, at the same time, bringing the clothes upl between the boards, and rollin g and pressing them.
A balance-wheel may be arranged on the side of the machine, and connected by a pitman with the handle, thereby making the operation easier.
The bottom of the box A is made convex, or sloping from the center both ways, as shown at 71 to prevent the clothes from going under the wash-boards, and at the lower edge of the wash-board E is attached a sloping board, m, for the same purpose.
Having thus fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the box A, provided with the convex part h in its bottom, the washboard D, springs G G, and wash-board E E, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the above, thc bars a a on the wash-board E, hooks I) b, arms H H, and handles I, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands this 15th day of October, 187 3.
JACOB WV. SPANGLER. BENJAMIN F. REICH.
