Description

j. K. NELSON.
improvement in Washing Machmes. No, 118,637. PatniedAug. 29.1w.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT lN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,637, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN K. NELsoN, of Mechanicstown, in the county of Frederick and in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washing-machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view partly in section, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of my machine.
A represents the box of my machine, provided with an inclined bottom, B, which inclines downward from rear to front, as shown. In the front end of the box A is an interior hinged board, O, which is operated by set-screws D D from the outside, thereby regulating the board 0, making the space at the end larger or smaller at will. By this means the operator is enabled to wash any quantity of clothing, whether large or small,
from a few pocket handerchiefs up to a large bedquilt. The front legs of the bed A extend up the sides and a suitable distance above the same, and at their upper ends are pivoted two arms, E E, to the loose ends of which the wash-board G is firmly attached. This wash-board is, on the upper side, toothed, or, rather, constructed with stair-steps, as shown in Fig. 1, and at the bottom it is hollowed out and provided at the rear with a perforated cross-board, H, to allow the free access of the suds to the rear when the board is pressing the clothing. From the wash-board G a double brace, I, connects it with alever, J, which is attached to the center of a roller, K, pivoted in the front legs of the box below the points where the arms E E are pivoted to the same.
Having thus fully described my inv ention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the box A, adjustable hinged board 0, wash-board G, perforated crossboard H, double brace I, and lever J all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of July, 1871.
JOHN K. NELSON.
