UNITED STATES PATENT ()rrron DAVID GRAFFIN, OF OATASAUQUA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-POUNDERS.
S ecification forming part of Letters Patent No.149,652, dated April 14, 1874; application filed March 7, 1874.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID GRAFFIN, of Catasauqua, in the county'of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes Washer,- of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a detail section of my improved clothes -was'her taken through the line 00 :0, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an under-side view of the" same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved machine for washing clothes, which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, which may be used with an ordi nary wash-tub, and which will wash the clothes quickly and thoroughly and without injuring them. The invention consists in the disk made concave upon its lower side, and convex upon its upper side, the handle, the brace-blocks, and the radial beater-blocks, constructedand combined with each other in substantially the manner herein shown and described.
A is a circular disk, which is made concave upon its lower side and convex upon its upper side. To the center of the upper side of the disk A is attached the lower end of the standard B, which has a cross-bar or other convelnthe upper side of the disk A are attached two or more radial bracing-blocks, D, which strengthen the disk, and also its connection with the handle or standard B. To the center of the under side of the disk A is attached or upon it is formed a semi-spherical knob or block, (H. To the under side of the disk A, and at equal distances from each other, are attached four radial semi-cylindrical blocks, a the ends of which are rounded off. To the under side of the disk A, midway between each two blocks (0 are attached radial blocks a, which are grooved transversely, and thespace between each two grooves is rounded off into semispherical form. Tov the under side of the disk A, in the spaces between the blocks a and a, are attached short radial blocks a, the ends of which are rounded off, and in which are formed two or more transverse rounded grooves, as shown in Fig.2.
The device thus constructed can be used in any ordinary washtub, and its concavity, as it is forced downward, draws the clothes in beneath it,-so that they will receive the full force of the blows. As the device is raised its concavity tends to draw the clothes up with it, which loosens the clothes and causes them to move, so that they may become more quickly saturated with water.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved clothes-pounder, consisting of the disk A, provided with beater-blocks a a a a 011 its concave under side, and the vertical handle, as shown and described.
