Description

STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. WITSIL, OF BEVERLY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO THOMAS L. BATES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPRVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,753, dated July 8, 1873; application filed June 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. WIrsIL, of Beverly, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- Boards; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full; clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of myimproved washing-board with a portion of its outer surface broken away for the purpose of showing the corrugations upon its inner surface.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation, showing the standards which support the handle, the end piece, the sides, and top 5 and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, showing the corrugated side boards,
which act as rubbers.
Corresponding letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is the production of a washing-board, which in its operation shall resemble as nearly as possible the action of a persons hands in washing clothes upon a plane corrugated surface 5 and to this end it consists in a washing-board having two beveled corrugated surfaces, so arranged as to be operated by the hand of the person using it, and at the same time of having its I sides of the end pieces A A longitudinal pieces B B are secured by screws, or in any other suitable manner. These side pieces may be of any desired length, according to the work to be done, they being .corrugated upon their inner surfaces, as shown in Figs. l and 3. y
If found desirable the corrugated surfaces may be faced with zinc or any other nonoxidizable metal, and thus a perfectly smooth surface will always be presented to the material operated upon.
Upon the upper surface of the side pieces B B and end piecesA A there is secured a plate, C, of metal or of wood, in such a manner as to cover the space left between the parts named, and prevent the passage of water or of clothes up through' the board.
To the ends of the devices vertical standards D D are attached, and extending from one to the other of these there is a rod, E, which serves as a handle by which to operate the device.
The operation of this implement will be as follows: The parts having been constructed and arranged, as shown, the device is ready for use, and when the clothes to be operated upon have been placed in a tub, or any other suitable vessel, the wash-board is to be placed upon the same, and when rocked or oscillated by the hand of the operator it will produce an effect very similar to that produced by the hand of a person when washing upon the washing-board in common use. y
Another and an important feature of this board is that it-may be used as a pounder, in which case it is to be lifted vertically, and then let fall upon the clothes, in which case it will drive the water through the interstices between the threads of the material, and thus rapidly remove the dirt therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
y 1. A washing-board, having an internal chamber, the sides of which are corrugated, Y
substantially as and forV the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the internally-corrugated sides B B, the rounded and beveled ends A A, and suitable handles for operating the same, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. L. WITSIL.
