UNITED STATES PATENT @Et-ICEc JESSE BARTOO, OF PLAINFIELD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,759, dated January 4, 1876; application filed November 19, 1875.
To all whom it .may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE BARTOO, of Plainfield, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a detail section of my improved machine, taken through the line .fr cc, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, the handles and cover heilig turned forward. Fig. 3 is a top view ot' the same.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved washing-machine, simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, washing the clothes very quickly and thoroughly, and without injuring them..
The invention consists in the combination of the two pounders, their arms, connectingbars, and lever with the suds-box, the cover, and the handles.
A is the suds-boX, which is made in the form of a quarter of a cylinder, and is'supported upon legs B of such a length as to raise the machine to a convenientheight. C are the handles, the outer parts of which are connected by a cross-bar, c. The inner ends ofthe handles G are pivoted to lugs c', attached to the forward parts of the top of the ends of the box A by a long rod, D, to which rod is also pivoted the forward edge of the cover E. The cover E has holes in its forward part to enable the progress of the washing to be inspected, which holes are covered by a cover, c', sliding upon the top of the cover E. To the handles C are attached arms F, iliade in the form of quarters of circles, with their forward edges hollowed out or recessed. The curve of the arms F corresponds, and is concentric with the curve of the suds-box A, so that the curved edges oi' the said arms may move along the curved side of the said box as the handles Gare oper- G is the lower pounder, the ends of which are secured to the forward part ot' the arms F. The lower side of the pounder G is curved to correspond with the curved side of the boX A, along which it n.` "is as the arms F are operated. The upper n of the pounder G is corrugated to serve as a rubber for rubbing the clothes. H is the upperpounder, which is made of such a length and size that it may operate in the space between the arms'F and pounder G. The ends of the pounder H are attached to arms I, which are pivoted to the upper forward corners ofthe ends of the suds-box A. TheI lower side of the pounder H is rounded olf, and its upper side is corrugated to serve as a rubber for the clothes. In the forward edges of the pounders G H are formed holes g It', which, as the said pounders are raised, become filled with air, to be discharged among the clothes as the pounders are forced down, to assist in removing the dirt. To the centers of the rear edges of the pounders G H are pivoted the lower ends of two short connecting-bars, J, the uppen ends of which are pivoted to the opposite ends of a lever, K. The lever K is pivoted to and between two cleats, L, attached to the inner side of the cover E. When the cover E is shut down its rear edge is secured to the rear edge of the suds-box A by a button, M, orother convenient fastening.
In using the machine the handles C and cover E are turned forward into the position shown in Fig. 2, raising the pounders, so that the clothes can be conveniently put in and taken out. When the clothes have been put in, the cover E is lowered and secured, and the handles C are worked up and down. This forces the pounders G H forward alternately. Each pounder as it moves forward carries down its supply of air, and presses the clothes against the forward side of the suds-box A, and holds them while they are rubbed by the movements of the other pounder, the clothes constantly changing their position, so as to be operated upon each time in a different place, so as to be thoroughly washed in a very short time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the two pounders G H, their arms FI, connecting-bars J, and lever K with the box A, the cover E, and the handles O, substantially as herein shown and described.
JESSE BARTOO. Witnesses G. N. CHITTENDEN, W. E. OHITTENDEN.
