Description

"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES LARRABEE, OF HAYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF THREE- FOURTHS OF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN YULE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 121,461, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LARRABEE, of Haywood, in the county of Alameda and State of Calif'ornia, have invented an Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved washing-machine, in which the best working results can be obtained with the least expenditure of labor. My machine consists of an elongated box of sufficient size to contain as many clothes as it is desired to wash at once. This box is provided with a series of triangular strips which extend transversely across the bottom and one end, over which the clothes are caused to pass by the movements of the machine. The box is mounted upon rockers so as to be moved easily, and by rocking it the clothes will be washed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, the iigure represents a side sectional elevation of my machine.
Similar letters indicate like parts.
A is a box, of wood, made somewhat longer than its width and depth, and provided with a convenient opening at the top for the introduction of clothes and water, and having a cover, B. The bottom of the interior of the vessel is provided with transverse triangular strips of distance up the side D, and at the other end arecovered, as shown at E. At the end D, on the outside, two posts are secured, and a bar, F, across the top gives a convenient handle by which to operate the machine. These posts and two others, G, at the other end of the box extend down to a suitable distance, and have the rockers H attached to them.
The rockers stand in the direction of the length of the box, and when the machine is operated the clothes will be moved across the strips C, thus washing them thoroughly.
By constructing the machine with rockers a different and much more effective movement is obtained than when it is mounted so as to turn on pivots, and the labor is greatly reduced.
Having thus described my invention, I do not wish to claim the box, nor the transverse corrugations or rifdes, as these are in common use; but What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The elongated box A provided with the transverse strips or corrugations C, as described, when mounted upon the rockers H and constructed to operate substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
