UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE,
JOHN GRAMELSPAGHER, OF JASPER, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [78,365, dated June 6, 1876; application filed April 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN GRAMELSPAOHER, of Jasper, in the county of Dubois and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved iNashing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of elastic rubbing fingers, of cotton or other like fibrous material, fitted so as to project from the surface, in combination with a stationary concave rubbingbed, which is extended along up an incline to the top of the tub, to afl'ord an auxiliary handrubbing bed, for convenience in rubbing out small things and parts of other things which cannot be as well treated by the cylinder.
The cylinder is mounted in vertically-adjustable sprin g-pressed boxes, to accommodate it to clothes differing in bulk.
A represents the rubbing-fingers of cotto or other fibrous and elastic material, which I combine with the cylinder B to make a kind of rubbing action, to some extent similar to hand-rubbing. O is the stationary concave rubbing-bed, which is prolonged at D, up an incline to the top of the tub E, to form an auxiliary hand-rubbing bed. F represents the boxes for the journals of the drum. They are pressed down by springs G, adjustable blocks H, and adjusting-screws I, to allow the drum to rise and fall as required, to suit the diiferent bulks of the clothes.
The drum is made of staves, with openings between them to allow the water to circulate freely. The standards J,in which itis mounted, are braced to the sides of tub by rods K.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The cylinder B, made of slats with intermediate open spaces, and provided with elastic fingers, in combination with a corresponding stationary rubber, having inclined extension D, the whole adapted to be used in a washtub, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
JOHN GRAMELSPAGHER.
