SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,076, dated February l, 1'88'7.
Application filed July 1, 18E6.
.To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FITZPATRIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-lvlachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in washing-machines; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that Will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on line x :u of Fig. 2.
A represents a rectangular suds-box, which is provided 4at one end, at its lower side, with a discharge-opening, B, havingaplug, C. Suitable depending legs, D, s'npport the suds-box above the ground. In the bottom of the sudsbox, at one end of the same, is locateda board, D,which is supported upon a number of coiled springs, E. Y.
F represents a frameor case comprising the vertical sides fand the transverse connectingbars f. In the centers of the said sides are openings f 2,-which are open on one side, as atfs.
G represents a series of transverse rollers, which are journaled in the sides F concentrically with the openings f2 and extend about one-fourth around the said openings. This frame or case F rests upon the spring-board D.
H represents a corrugated roller, which is journaled in the sides of the suds-box and is arranged concentrically with the rollers G. To one end of the shaft of the 'roller H is attached a gear-wheel, I, which is on the outer side of the suds bo'X.
K representsa vertical board, which is placed in one end of the suds-box and bears against the case or frame F, the said board having on its outer side the series of coiled bearingsprings L, which bear against the opposing end wall of the suds-box.

N represents a small roller, having one end 0f its spindle journaled in the opening m2 and the other end of its spindle bearing in the inner end of the opening mi. An endless apron, O, passes around the outer sides of the series of rollers G, extends longitudinally through the suds-box, and passes around the outerl side of the roller N, thus connecting, the said rollers N and G together. The said apron alsopasses under the large roller H.
P represents a roller, which is journaled in blocks R, that are attached to the upper edges of the sides of the suds-box, the said roller P being arranged parallel with the large roller H. An endless apron, S, connects the rollers Hl and P.
T represents a bracket, which is secured on one side of the suds-box. In the upper end ofthis bracket is jonrnaled ashaft, U, to which is rigidly attached a gear wheel, V, which meshes with the wheel I. A crank, NV, is also attached to the shaft U.
The operation of my invention is as follows: 7 5 When the shaft U is rotated by means of the crank W, the Wheel V is turned, and imparts motion through the gear-wheel I to the large roller H, which causes the endless aprons O and S to move in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2. As the upper side of the apron O passes under the roller H, and as the apron S also passes around the saidroller, it will be seen that the said aprons are in contact with each other at one end of the suds-box. A suitable quantity of suds is placed in the suds-box, and the articles to be washed are placed upon the apron O. As the said apron moves, it carries the articles between the roll ers H and G, thereby subjecting them to pressure between the said rollers, and the action of the rollers on the articles forces the water or suds through and through them, thus loosening and dislodgingthe dirt. As the articles escape from between the rollers H and G they are carried by the apron S in the reverse direction and again 'dropped upon the apron O, and this operation is repeated as long as may be necessary. The suds are then drawn from the suds-box and clean water is substituted roo ter is pressed therefrom, and the clothes may be then hung upon the line.
It will be observed from the foregoing that the operation of washing the clothes may be performed Without handling them at all, it being only necessary to feed the clothing in the first place upon the apron O.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. rIhe combination of the suds-box, the roller N in one end thereof, the roller H near the opposite end of the suds-box, the rollers G, arranged around the roller H, and springs for forcingthe said rollers G and H into Contact with eaeh other, the roller P, the apron O, oonneeting the rollers N and G and passing under the roller H, and the apron S, connecting the rollers H and P, the said apron S being in Contact at one end with the apron O, and means for rotating the roller H, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the suds-box, the frame M in one end thereof, and having the roller N, the frame Fin the opposite end of the suds-box, and having the series of rollers G, the spring-boards bearing against the urider side and outer end of the frame F, the roller H, arranged eoneentrically with the rollers G, the said latter rollers being pressed against the said roller H by means of the spring-boards, the roller P, journaled parallel `with the roller H and connected thereto by the endless apron S, the endless apron O, oonneeting the series of rollers G and the roller M, and passing under the roller H, and means, substantially as described, for rotating the roller H, substantially as deseribed.
