Description
v 28h ssss --Sheeti Q W. IENNINGS. Y Washing-Machines. N0 139,159' l Patented May 20,1873.
UNITED STATES AMOS W. JENNINGS,
OF RAVENNA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming ypart of Letters Patent No. 139,159, dated May 20, 1873; application filed April 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aaros W. JENNINes, of Ravenna, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specilication, and to the letters and gures of reference marked there- Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a sectional view of my machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my spring Fig. 3 is a top view of my machine.
My invention relates to washing-machines;
`and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter described, which are designed to serve as valuable improvements in the art to which they appertain.
A A of the drawing represent two upright walls or supports, within and between which I arrange one large and three small corrugated rollers, in the manner shown on Fig. 1. rlhe addition of the central small roller, marked B on the drawing, I tiud to be a decided improvement in washing machines operated on the roller or wringer principle. These several rollers are marked, respectively, A B O D on the drawing. The letters D and E indicate connecting-bars, and G represents a' roller near the bottom of my machine that works in connection with the guide-belt next mentioned. H represents a belt, of cloth or other suitable material, that passes around the roller G, over the rollers B, C, and D, and below the roller A. This guide-belt serves to aid in the passage of soiled garments between the ,'rollers, where they are washed, and to the suds after passing said rollers. The frame-pieces or Walls of my Washing-machine are slotted, as shown at a, at the bottom of which slots the journals of roller A have their bearings. The letter Y represents a rubber spring arranged around the pendent and removable hooked bar W, and L is a plate attached to the outer side of a wall,
A, constructed to form a recess adapted to hold the upper end of spring Y, and to form a ledge or stop, against which the top of said spring abuts. The rubber is held in its place upon the rod, and tightened or loosened at will by means of the nut and screw, shown at f on Fig. 2. To remove this spring and liberate the journal of roller A the operator lifts,
or rather swings, said spring to the right from the bottom, and thereby releases the hook of the spring-bar from its position over said journal.
Hy device is designed for use in an ordinary wash-tub, and hence I have constructed means for securing it in sui-h tub. These means consist in the blocks marked g and h on Fig. 3. I construct one of these blocks with claspingpins t' i, adapted to lit the frame of the washing machine, and spurs n ln., adapted to pass into the. body of the wash-tub.
I rst adjust this lastmentioned block, marked g, and after placing the frame in proper position I take the block h, which is much wider than block g, and, after securing its spurs in the side ofthe tub, I press its opposite side downward against the frame A; and the Washing machine is made secure in its position, as Well as removable at will. Both of these fastening-blocks rest on the bottom of the tub.
`What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a washing machine, the combination of the frame A, corrugated rollers Af, B, C, and D, guide-band H, and fastening-blocks g and It, arranged, with reference to each other, substantially as specified. l
2. In aWashing-machine, the springY, having hooked rod NV, in combination with the stop-plate L, the roller A', and its journal, constructed as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
AMOS W. JENNINGS, M. D.
