NIP ETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHiNGTON. D
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. STEWART, OF RUSSELL, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,356, dated February 12, 1878; application filed July 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. STEWART, of Russell, in the county of Lucas and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detached sectional view of the same.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to certain improvements in washing-machines; and it consists in providing means for the attachment thereto of the wringer, and in means for keeping the washed and unwashed articles apart, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to a receptacle which receives the clothes or other articles to be washed, made in any preferred form, and supported upon legs a a or otherwise. To the sides of the receptacle A, about midway their lengths, are secured hollow slotted uprights B B, containing yielding bearings 11, cushioned or supported in the hollow uprights B Bmpon springs b b or their equivalent.
Upon the bearings b is supported the axis 0 of the rubber, the ends of which pass through slots cl in the hollow uprights B B and slots 6 e in bars or slides O 0. These bars or slides G 0 move in guides f attached to the hollow uprights O O, and are connected to an axis or fulcrum, D, upon which is placed the foot lever or bar E,bearing at one end against the receptacle A.
- By this arrangement it will be seen that, as the free end of the lever or bar E is depressed, pressure will be brought upon the rubber, holding it down to its work. Upon releasing the lever or bar E, the rubber will be elevated by the distension or expansion of the springs b b, and the washed articles allowed to be removed.
F is the rubber, connected to the bar or axis 0, as above intimated, by bars g. h is a handle for operating the rubber F, connected thereto by the bifurcated or divergent arms In the bottom of the receptacle A is a series of rollers, G G, arranged in the arc of a circle, and journaled in segments ifastened to the inner sides of the said receptacle. These rollers assist the rubber in washing the clothes or other articles.
Disposed in the bottom of the receptacle A, opposite the rollers G G, are partitions or boards 0 c, slanting inwardly and toward said rollers, to separate the clothes or articles being washed from those unwashed. These boards or partitions are recessed or cut away upon their lower edges for the passage of the water.
One end of the receptacle A is reduced or stepped, as at j j, against the vertical portion of which step is fastened a board, k, between which and that end of the receptacle is left a space, Z, the object of which will be presently seen.
and the board k, a wringer may be clamped or otherwise detachably connected to the machine, and any water or drippings from the wringing of the clothes or other articles being washed will be returned to the receptacle through the space or aperture Z.
I do not claim a series of rollers having imperforate strips at each end thereof of less height than the rollers themselves, as such is 2. The partitions c c, recessed, as shown and described, to admit of the free circulation of the water, in combination with the sudsbox A and rollers G G, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in pres: ence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. STEWART.
Witnesses:
JOHN 0. 0001:, JAMES E. VAN GILDER.
By thus stepping or reducing the receptacle
