SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,853, dated April 1, 1902. Application filed September 28, 1901. Serial No. 76,927. (No modeLl T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PRISOILLA Borz, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Tawas, in the county of Iosco and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to washing-machines, and more particularly to reciprocating hand rubbers for washboards and means for attaching them to the board.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means whereby the clothes may be thoroughly rubbed upon a washboard withoutgrasping them with the hands, thus av0iding injury to the hands by the rubbing contact thereof with the rough surface of the washboard.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel and effective means for attaching a rubber to a washboard in such a manner as to permit of its ready detachment when necessary.
With these ends in View the invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a washboard provided with my improvements, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner face of the hand-rubber.
The washboard comprises a longitudinallyrecessed frame 1 and corrugated rubbing-surface 2. As a securing means for the rubber I provide a wire frame comprising parallel rods 3, extending throughout the length of the washboard-frame. The upper ends 4 of the rods 3 are bent rearward to engage the top of the frame 1 and connected bya transverse rod 5, which rests upon the top of the frame. The wire frame is secured .to the top of the washboard-frame by catches 6, adapted to extend over the bent ends of the rods 4. The lower ends 7 of the wire rods 3 extend below the lower ends of the sides of the frame and are bent to enter holes in the ends of the frame, thus securing the rods detachably.
I preferably employ only one rubber, comprising a back 8, adapted to be grasped by the hand, and a rubbing-surface 9, of grooved hard wood or corrugated rubber or like yielding material, adapted to firmly hold the clothes upon the corrugated surface of the board.
The back of the rubber is formed with one or more openings, through which extend transverse wires 10, formed at their ends with eyes or loops 11, through which the rods 3 extend. The transverse wires 10 are thus loosely attached to the sides of the wire frame and are freely movable thereon.
The utility and operation of the invention will be apparent. The rubber is readily moved up and down or across the board, and the clothes may be subjected to a thorough rubbing without danger to the hands, which hold the rubber by the back thereof.
The rubberissupportedasufficientdistance from the surface of the board to admit the clothes behind it, and the resiliency of the wire permits of the requisite outward move ment of the rubber.
A feature of the invention is the ready removability of the entire attachment when required.
I claim- 1. The combination with a washboard, of a wire frame comprising parallel rods connected together at their upper ends, means for securing the rods to the sides of the washboardframe, a transverse rod looselyattached atits ends to said parallel rods, and a hand-rubber movably supported on said transverse rod.
2. The combination with a washboard, of a wire frame comprising parallel wire rods bent rearward at their upper ends and connected by atransverse wire rod, means for detachably connecting the rods to the frame comprising the upturned ends of the rods and catches at the top of the frame, transverse rods having loops at their ends through which the parallel rods extend, and a rubber having openings through which the transverse rods extend, and provided with a corrugated rubhing-surface.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PRISGILLA BOTZ.
