IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification describing a new and Improved Washing-Machine, invented by JOHN EOKER- SON. of Spring Valley, in the county of Rockland and State of New York.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washing-machine, simple in con struction, convenient in use, and eli'ectiv'e in operation, washin g the clothes thoroughly and quickly, so that there will be no necessity for rubbing any part of them; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described.

A is a rectangular frame, which is supported by legs B,of such a length as to raise the ma chine to a. convenient height. The frame A is made of such a size as to receive andhold the tub O, which is made slightly tapering, and the inner surface of its sides is corrugated vertically, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To the center of the bottom of the tub (J is pivoted a disk, D, to the center of which is attached the lower end of the shaft E, the upper end of which passes up through a cross-bar F, the ends of which enter notches formed in the upper ends of the lugs G, attached to the opposite sides of the tub G, where they are detachably secured in place by pins H. To the upper part of the shaft E, a little below the cross-bar F, are attached the centers of two bars, I, crossing each other at right angles, and which are halved to each other. journals of which enter slots in the disk D and in the arms I. The rollers J are held out toward the sides of the tub O by coiled springs K, placed in the slots in the disk D and in the arms I. The inner ends of the springs K rest against the inner ends of the slots in which they are placed, and their outer ends rest against the heads of the guide-pins L, the outer sides of which heads are concaved to rest against the journals of the rollers J and hold them out to bear against the clothes with the necessary pressure. To the upper end of the shaft E is attached a crank, M, by which the machine is operated. the machine, which is made in two parts, fitting closely into the space between the sides of the tub (l and the sides of the crossbar F, as shown in Fig. 2.

In using the machine, the clothes to be washed are placed in the spaces between the rollers J, shaft E, and sides of the tub G, and as the system of rollers is revolved or turned backward and forward the clothes are pressed and rubbed between the corrugated rollers J and the corrugated sides of the tub 0, cleaning them thoroughly in a very short time.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent An improved washingmaehine, formed by the combination of the frame A, legs B, tub (l, corrugated vertically upon its inner sides, disk D, shaft E, detachable cross-bar F, crossbars I, corrugated rollers J, springs K, guidepins L, crank M, and cover N, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
