UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JOHN WV. OVERMAN, OF FORT FETTERMAN, VYOMING TERRITORY.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,059, dated February 9. 1385-- Application filed April 11. 1885. Serial No. 161,977.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. OVERMAN, of Fort Fetterman, in the county of Albany and Territory of Wyoming, have invented a new and Improved Washing Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the combination, with a revolving tub secured on a spindle, of a ribbed fixed cylinder in the middle of the tub, and of a curved wash-board in the tub.
The invention also consists in parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a cross-sectional elevation of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, parts being broken and others in section.
A vertical shaft, A, is journaled in a crosspiece, B, of a frame, 0, supported by legs, and in a bar secured to the bottom of the crosspiece.- To the head on the upper end of the shaft the bottom of a tub, D, is secured, and the ends of a cross-frame, E, held on the shaft A, rest against the bottom of the tub. A vertical ribbed cylinder, F, is provided on its upper end with a disk, G, secured to a vertical rod, H, depending from the free end of a horizontal bar that is secured at its other end to the top of the upright K. The lower end of the cylinder has a recess, F, to receive a boss, D, on the center of the inner face of the tub-bottom. The cylinder and tub will thus be held in proper position relative to each other while the tub is being rotated. In. the tub a curved or segmental wash-board, L, is placed, which is formed of aseries of slats, M, secured to two spring-strips, N. Asmall cleat, M, is secured on the rear surface of the upper spring-strip, N, at each end, and the said cleats pass into grooves in lugs P on the inside of the tub. The said cleats hold the washboard in place. The spring-tension in the strips N presses the wash-board against the .roller, and the pressure on the articles is the Model.)
same at all times. As the articles increase in size the spring wash-board is pressed back, as shown in dotted lines. The slats of the washboard stand vertically. The tub is provided with a series of handles, 0, projecting from the outer surface. The clothes are placed in the tub, which is revolved by means of the handles, are rotated alternately in opposite directions, the cylinder F remaining stationary and the tub turning with its spindle or shal'tA.
Large articles of clothing-sheets, &cor any number of small articlessuch as socks, stockings, handkerchiefs, napkins,&c.can be washed easily and rapidly in my improved machine.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a revolving tub, of a fixed ribbed cylinderin the tub, and of a curved wash-board in the tub, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the revolving tub having a boss, D, on its bottom, of the fixed central ribbed cylinder having a recess in its lower end to receive the bars, and a curved wash-board adjacent to the vertical face of the fixed cylinder, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the frame 0, of the spindle A, the cross-frame E, the tub D on the spindle, the fixed ribbed cylinder F in the tub, and a wash board held in the tub, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the revolving tub D, of the fixed ribbed cylinder F in the same, the spring'strips N, and the slats M, secured to the same, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with a tub, of the springs N, the slats M, secured to the same, cleats M on the ends of the upper spring, N, the lugs P, secured to the inside of the tub, and a vertically-ribbed cylinder in the mid dle 0f the tub, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN W. OXERMAN.
