Description

(No Model.)
R. BITNER. WASHING MACHINE.
No. 481,659. Patented Aug. 30, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN BITNER, OF LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,659, dated August 30, 1892.
Application filed May 5, 1892- Serial No. 431,868. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LREUBEN BITNEE,a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to washingmachines, and has for its object certain improvements in construction, which will be 'fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section on the line :1: as on Fig. 1.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates a tub supported upon suitable legs, as a,of which only two are shown, and is provided with ribbed and grooved bars or rubbers I), attached to the body of the tub, like radial bars c,secured to the bottom (1 of the tub, and a post or column. B in the center of the tub, to which like vertical bars 6 are secured. I
Above the bars I) is an inwardly-projecting annular flange f, which forms a support for the cover 0 at its outer edge and also serves to prevent the escape of steam, or water being spilled out over the upper end of the tub when the machine is in use. The cover also rests upon the post B, in the upper end and center of which is a pin g, which enters a recess or seat h in the cover and permits the cover to oscillate in a circle Without wabbling about in the tub.
From the under side of the coverG depend studs or pins D, which operate between the inner rubbers or bars 6 and the outer rubbers b and engage the cloths or other articles to be washed and move them back and forth in contact with the rubbers as the cover is oscillated by means of the lever E, which is attached to the top of the cover and projects from one side thereof. To the coverC is also attached a vertical post F, which serves as a handle to raise or remove the cover from the tub and to replace the same, one hand being applied to the lever E and the other to the handle F, and when the cover is being oscillated the handle F forms a convenient rest or support for one hand, while the other hand is employed to operate the lever E.
Above the tub and attached thereto is a tray G to support a wringer, (not shown,) which when in use is secured to the vertical back i, and the bottom of the tray projects inward over the tub to conduct water from the wringer back into the tub. Water is drawn from the tub through the discharge-spout it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A washing-machine consisting of a tub having a central column and rubbers secured to the bottom, the inside of the tub, and to said column, in combination with a cover provided with studs projecting downward from the under side, a lever for oscillating the cover, and an annular flange, substantially as described.
2. A washing-machine consisting of a tub having a central column provided with vertical ribbed and grooved rubbers or bars, like grooved and ribbed rubbers or bars secured to the inner side of the tub and like radial rubbers attached to the bottom of the tub, and an annular inwardly-projecting flange, in combination with a cover supported upon said column and flange and provided with a lever and a vertical handle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
