Description

" tight, and of any desired form.
B. scarrnneoouor sT. JOHNS, MICHIGAN.
Lettere PatentNo. 100,808, dated March 15, 1870; `aatedateal March 11, 1870.-l
Iamnovnn WASHING-Measure.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe :amai
To whom it may conce/rn Be it known that I, E. B. SCATTERGOOD, of St. Johns, in the county.of Clinton, and State of Michi-V gan, have invented a new andv useful 4Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do declare that the follow- `ing is a true and accurate description .thereof refer-` y ence being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, `and beinglr a part of this specification.
. The' nature of this invention relates to animprovement in the construction ofthatclass of machines employed in cleansing textile fabrics; and consists in a tub or box of'` any desired form, within which is fitted a receptacle for the fabrics, which is made of non-corroding wire-cloth, or its equivalent, sustained upon springsof any desired form, and which shonld'also be made of non-colToding material, such as 'galvanized iron, or its equivalent, and any suitable pounde1',`op
erated vertically by any desired power.
In the drawings, which arein vertical section- A represents any suitable tub or box made water- B are springs, made of any proper non--corrodingmaterial, which 'rest 4upon the bottom of the tub Ah and support the basket 0,-. which should be made to conformV to the shape of the tub A of wire-cloth of a coarse mesh, and should also be constructed of non-` corroding material. This basket is intended as a re ceptacle for the clothes to be cleansed.
D is a pounder-head attached to the lower end of the handle-E or shaft, to which a vertically-reciprocat-` ing motion maybe communicated by any desired power.
If convenient and more preferable, the springs B may be secured in a frame, F, which should vbe placed'in the bottom of the tub.
The various parts being in place, as described, the necessary water. being in the tub,the clothes should be placed in the basket, when the pounder should be operated. in the usual way. Every downward motion of thefpounder forces the clothes under'the water by 'compressing the springs, while the expansion of the same will elevate them upon the upward stroke of the pounder. The further operation of this. device is so simple that a more full description is deemed unnecessary. v
What I claim as my invention, and desireto seclne by Letters Patent, is-- The wire basket C, supported vby the springs B, in combination with the tub`A, and pounder E,wl1en constructed and arranged to operate as herein described.
E. B. SCATTERGOOD.
