Description

JAMES M. NOBLE.
Improvement in Washing-Machines.
No. 114,030. PatentedApril25,187l.

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. NOBLE, OF DELHI, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING -MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,030, dated April 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern 5 Be it known that I, JAMES M. NOBLE, of Delhi, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved washing machine. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new washingmachine, which consists of a cylindrical rocking suds-box, whose motion serves to agitate the suds and clean the fabrics put into it.
The invention consists in providing the said rocking suds-box with a perforated bottom, and with a funnel-shaped opening in top, the ends of the fminel forming flanges for arresting the motion of the suds.
A in the drawing represents the supporting-frame of my washing-machine. It consists of two side boards, a a, which are braced transversely, and contain concave rails b b for the support of the sudsbox. B is the sudsbox. It is of cylindrical form, of suitable size. Its circumference is preferably made of metal, while its heads are of wood. This suds-box rests on the rails 11 b, as shown in Fig. 1, and is, by the projecting sides a, held thereon, so that it cannot fall off on the side. The box B is open on top, having a funnel, 0, introduced within the opening, the sides 0 c of the funnel extending some distance into the box, as in Fig. 1. A lid, d, can be put into the funnel to close the box. Within the suds-box is placed a false bottom, D, which is perforated at the ends and quite flat, as shown.
The articles to be washed rest on D, and the suds are under the false bottom, and reach up to suitable height.
By rocking the box B on the rails the suds will be agitated, and will, fromunder the false bottom, be worked up to strike the garments and clean the same. When they reach the sides 0 of the hopper theirmotion is arrested, or rathher the direction of the same cahnged, to be utilized on another side of the goods.
This machine, it will be seen, is quite free from complexity and inconvenient adjustments during operation, and therefore not likely to get out of order. It is well adapted to the use of suds boiling hot, and combines great working capacity with small comparative size, and consequent labor and expense. It can be .used for all the manifold works in washing.
The perforated false bottom is so located that the goods being washed will be kept above it, giving the suds an unobstructed passage beneath, accumulating force thereby for lifting, halfturning, and violently dashing the goods from side to side.
Through an aperture, e, in the side of the box the suds can be discharged whenever desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The cylindrical rocking suds-boxB, provided with the perforated false bottom D, and with the hopper 0, having the inwardly-projecting sides 0, as specified JAMES M. NOBLE.
