IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,780, dated June 6, 1871.
To all whom it may conce-m:
' Be it known that I, N one H. STALLINs, of Yindsor, county of Bertie and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a clear and exact description thereof sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, inwhich- Figure l is a top view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectionK My invention relates to an improved wash ing-machine, so constructed as to wash the clothes quickly and cleanly, saving much time and labor, and also preventing the wear and tear of the clothes, which is not the case in most of the washing-machines now in use. It consists of a Wooden tank of any desired shape, but preferably made in the form cf a parallelogram, or nearly so, having an arm or lever extending horizontally across it, one end of which is pivoted or hinged to one of the upper ends oi' the tank. Near the center of the arm is attached a cross-piece, the .ends of which, respectively, rest upon springs, con` structed of wood or spring-steel, as may be desired, an'd fastened to the upper sides ofthe boX or tank. This tank is provided with suitable legs, and has an opening in the side near the bottom for the purpose of drawing ofi' the water at various times during the washing of the clothes or after the same have been Washed. There may be hand-holes, of any convenient form or shape, attached to the sides or ends the tank, for removing the same from place to place. A Wooden partition extends across the inner part of the tank near one end, which is intended for a receptacle for the clothes after being washed, for the purpose of rinsing them. An upright arm is also fast cned to the horizontal lever, which descends into the tank, and is fixed to a perforated square board by means of braces attached to the upper end oi' the upright arm, and also on the ends of the perforated board.
In the drawing, A may represent the body of the tank, near one end of which is a partition-box, B, used for throwing the clothes in after being Washed for the purpose of rinsing.

In operating my washing machine the clothes are thrown in the tank A, which is partly filled with Water, and the arm or lever C is given an up-and-down motion. When the clothes are sufficiently Washed they may be thrown into the partition-box, thus making room in the tank for other clothes.
The simplicity of this machine will readily commend its use, and its advantages over others will be readily seen by those who use them. Though simple, its effectiveness is in nowise limited, and its operation is as perfect as any of the more complicated.
