ANNA SOPHIA FRIDOLPII, OF YAYNE, NEBRASKA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,597, dated February 8,1898.
Application iiled March l()J 1897- To all wir/ont t may concern: I
Be it known that LANNA SOPHIA FRID OLPH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vayne, in the county of Wayne and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and p use the same, reference being had to the ac- Fig. 3 is a plan view of the suds-box, the
cover being removed. Fig. 4 is a view of the cover, looking from the under side and showing the oscillating rubber. y j i In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates a rectangular metal suds-boX adapted to be placed on a stove, and has secured to its upper end a rectangular frame 2, provided with hooks 3, which engage with the edge of the stove and hold it in place thereon. These hooks consist of downwardly and outwardly inclined bars having their lower ends turned downwardly and formed with inwardly-extending lugs 3, which engage with the ,top of the stove. By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be seen that there are two of these bars at one end of the machine, which are permanently fixed thereto. The other end of the machine may have only one bar, and it is adjustably connected with the same as follows: Secured to the suds-box is a metal lug 3b, having a scre w-threaded aperture, th rough which passes a set-screw 3G. The inner `end of the bar is located between the lug and suds-box and is clamped to the latter and held in place by the set-screw. By loosening this screw the bar can be adj usted to fit vary- Located in said suds-boX is a removable basket 4f, comprising the oval Serial No. 626,861. (No model.)
solid bottom 5, to which is secured a number of curved upwardly-extending tapering bars 6, the upper ends of which are secured to a rectangular frame 7, which is supported upon cleats 8, secured to the suds-box, whereby'the bottom of the basket is held out of contact with the bottom of the suds-boX.
The numeral 9 designates a cover hinged to the frame 2, having a central aperture, through which passes an angular verticallymovable rod or bar lO, to the lower end of which is secured a semispherical rubber 12, pro vided with a number of projections or pins 13. -The rod or bar -10 also passes through an aperture in a pinion 14, journaled to a bracket 15, secured to said cover. This pinion meshes with a coggear 16,' also journaled to said bracket and provided with a handle 17, by which it may be oscillated.
The operation is as follows: The machine is set on a stove-and the clothes to be washed placed in the basket. Water in which soap has been dissolved is then added to the sudsboX and the rubber oscillated through the medium of the cog-gear and pinion. This water will become heated by the stove, when it is drawn out and the suds-box refilled and the clothes replaced in the basket. The clothesare now allowed to remain until the water boils, when they are again subjected to the action of the rubber, when they will become clean and ready for the wringer.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is-- In a washing-machine, the combination with the metallic suds-box adapted to seat upon a stove, the rectangular frame, the hooks permanently secured to one end thereof having the lowerends turned inwardly forming lugs, the hook or bar at the opposite end of the suds-box, the lug secured to the suds-box having a screw-threaded aperture, the setscrew for clamping the hook to the suds-box, the hinged cover, the basket, the rubber and means for oscillating the rubber, subst-antially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANNA SOPHIA FRIDOLPI-I.
