SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,247, dated May 22, 1883,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY LIGHTY, of Rossville, in the countyof (llintomaud in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Washing-Machines; and

I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention has for its objects to provide an improved washing-machine by means of which clothing and other'articles may be subjected to a rubbing action against a suitable wash-board, similar to the action of the hand rubbing in ordinary washing, so as to thoronghly cleanse the articles without injury to the same, as morefully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by themeans illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved machine; Fig. 2, a detached side elevation of the rubbing-head and clamping devices, and Fig. 3a cross-section of the rubbing-head. 7 I

In the said drawings, the letter A indicates a rectangular vessel or tub, which is lined with sheet metal-such as zinc--to prevent leaking. In the bottom of said vessel or tub is located a frame, B, having a series of transverse rubbing-bars, which are arranged in a semi-elliptical line, in order to subject the clothes to a squeezing as well as a rubbing action as they are carried to the ends of the frame. The tub is provided with ahinged top, 0, which has a slot, D, through it, and bearings E at each side for the pin F, which extends through the rubber-staff G, which is located in the slot insuch manner that the staff may be conveniently oscillated. To the lower end of the stafl is secured arubber-head consisting of two bars, one attached rigidly and the other loosely to the shaft. Above the upper bar, which is loosely attached to the shaft, is a loose sleeve, H, mounted on the said shaft. The upper end of said sleeve is provided with an inclined bearing, and the staff with a pin, K, against which the bearing abuts, so that by turning said sleeve the upper bar may be forced toward the lower bar in order to clamp the clothes between the two.

To operate my improved machine the cover is thrown back on its hinges until it rests upon the arm L. The water and other materials are then placed in the tub and the clothes are clamped in therubber-head. The cover is then closeddown and fastened, and the washingis effected by oscillating the rubber-staff; The rubbing-bars in the frame at the bottom of the tub, being elevated above the bottom, permit the dirt to settle and collect below the clothes.

Instead oftheinclined hearing,aspiralspriug may be employed to clamp the rubber-head.

Having thus described my in vention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The combination, in a washing-machine, of the tub or vessel A, the slotted top secured thereto, the rubber-shaft G, mounted on a shaft journaled in hearings in the top, the hollow sleeve H, having inclined bearings, the pin K, and the clamping bars between which the clothes are secured, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
