Description

'anni @dat ARTHUR M. PAULLIN,' 0F ATLANTA, ILLINOIS.`
Letters Paant'No. wenst, dated November` 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT INwAs-HlNe-MAHIHES.
'HPO- The Schedule referred to' in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. PAULnuLof Atlanta, in the .county of Logan and State .of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the tbllowingis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation Vof the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a 'representation of my machine in plan view; and
lIfigure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
The nature-ot' lny invention consists'in the construction and'arrangement of a washing-machine, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,'I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents an oblong box, ot' any suitable dimensions, resting upon legs B B. Y
Nearer one end than the other, crosswise in this box, is placed 'a luted cylinder, C, the journals of which have their bearings in the side of' the box.
On one of these journals is placed a crank, E, by means of which the roller is revolved.
Under and on one side of the cylinder O is placed a roller wash-board, composed of curvedsde-pieces D D, with rollers G G between them, the upper ends of lthe side-pieces being connected by a cross-piece, H, as t shown in iig. 1.
The curved side-pieces or arms D D are each made in two pieces hinged together, as shown in fig. 2, whereby they can more readily be made to nt 1n under the cylinder.
The upper end ot" the wash-board, thus constructed,
is held at any desired distance from the cylinder by means of a rod, a, laid across the box A in notches or cleats?) b attached to its sides.
The wash-board is further thrown up to the tinted cylinder by means oi'a foot-treadle, I, connected by a rod, d, with an arm, J, extending from the orossi piece H.
Having thus fully described my invention,
That I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the box A, cylinder C, washboard D G, notched cleats b b, rod a, and treadle I, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed myname in the presence of two witnesses. v
ARTHUR M. PAULLIN.
IVitnesses MILTON D. BEWAN, J. HENRY BALL.
