Let-Iers `Patent No. 101,441, dated April 5, 1870.
IMPRovED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in. these Letters Patent and making part ot the same make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of'this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, durable, and effective machine for washing clothes by the rubbing process; and
It consists in operating a rubber plate ot' wood or other suitable material ou a bed composed of rollers, by means of levers and jointed arms or rods connected and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
rl`he accompanying drawing is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine.
B isvthe bed,-wlch is composed of a series of rollers arranged' in any desired manner, and more or less in number.
These -bed rollers revolve on pivot-s in their ends in the piece C on each side of the tub or box D.
vE E'are double levers connected -together at their `top ends by handles F F.
Their lower ends are hinged to the pieces C, as seen at G G, which points form the fulcra of the levers.
H H are rods or arms which connect the levers with the rubber A.
I is a button, which turns down onto the fulcrum rod of one cf the levers, to keep the ends of the pieces O from rising when force is applied to the handles F in rubbing.
By turning up this button, the pieces C, with the bed and the levers, may be removed from the tub, so that the tub may be used for rinsing or other purposes as an ordinary wash-tub.
'Two persons may operate this machine'at the same.
time. In washing with this machine the handles F F are alternately raised and depressed, the connecting links H H conveying motion to the rubber. Any
amount of pressure by means of springs or weights may be employed in addition to the weights which would naturally be brought to bear upon the rubber in operating the levers.
This is a simple and cheap device for washing, easily made and repaired, and not liable to get out` of order. Its advantages over more complicated and expensive apparatus must be obvious to all.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y The rubber A and the bed B, or its equivalent, in
vcombination with the levers E E, and connecting rods H H, and pivot rods G G with holder I, arranged and operating substantially as andv for the purposes herein shown and described.
JOHN K. DERBY.
