Description

LOYAL M. DODDRIDGE, OF UNION CITY, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,219, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LOYAL M. DODDRIDGE, of Union City, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana7 have invented a new and Improved Nashilig-Machine 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full7 clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part oi' this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved washing-maehine on theline c 7c, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section oi the same on the line c c, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on the line 7c f, Fig. I.
Similar letters ofreference indicate correspon ding parts.
My invention consists in improving. machines for washing clothes, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out inthe claim.
A is an oblong rectangular box, having` vertical ribs d d centrally placed opposite to each other, and on the inner part of the long sides c e c are friction-rollers arranged in an upright position as will be perceived from Fig. 1, projects up and beyond the bearing D and receives a fast spurwheel, a, upon it. The circular rack F, arranged on a vibrating-shaft in frame G, may oseillate it, or it may be rotated by any suitable mechanism. The bearing D has an annular horizontal iiange on top, which iits into a corresponding rabbet in the cover B.
The operation is as follows: The clothes being placed at either end of the oblong box and the parts C E caused to oscillate or rotate, the ringers b will seize upon the clothes and carry them over the ribs d from one side to the other, pressing and rubbing them thoroughly. As in the pressure lengthwise of the box the ingers have less purchase and are liable to lose their hold of the clothes, I apply the rolls e so as to use rolling friction on the sides most distant from the fingers and sliding' frictionon the sides that are' nearest.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I esteem to be new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of rotary flasher-shaft G, having arms b and stationary wash-boards cl, with the series of rollers e, arranged as and for the purpose specied.
