IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-WRINGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,851, dated June 11, 1878; application filed November 6, 1877. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMILTON E. SMITH, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Olothes-Wringers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a sectional end view. Fig. 2 is a vertical front view, partly in section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the combination, in a clothes-wringer, of two elastic rollers, with two standards connected by a traverse, and made of spring-steel, each being bent to form a ring, in the interior of which are secured the boxes which form the bearings for the shafts of the two elastic rollers so that by the elasticity inherent to the rings of the standards the two elastic rollers are held in close contact, and are permitted to accommodate themselves to the thickness of the material passing through between them. The pressure exerted by the elastic rollers is adjusted by set-screws secured in the rings of the elastic standards. With these standards are combined spring-jaws for securing the wringer to a wash-tub.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the frame of my clothes-wringer, which is composed of two standards, B B, and a traverse, O. The standards-B B are made of spring-steel, bent to form rings a, and in these rings are situated the boxes I) b, which form the bearings for the shafts of the elastic rollers D.
The boxes I) are rigidly secured to the standards B by means of screws 0; but the boxes I) are held in position by set-screws d, which are secured in the interior of the rings a, so that the pressure exerted by the elastic rollers on the material passing through between them can be regulated. The rings a, being made of spring-steel, allow the rollers D to yield and to accommodate themselves to the thickness of the material passing through between them.
From this description it will be seen that in my wringer the standards B themselves form the springs, which keep the elastic rollers in contact, and allow the same to yield and to accommodate themselves to different thicknesses of the material which is passed through between them, and by this construction my wringer is rendered superior in simplicity of construction, in lightness, and in durability.
The ends of the standards B extend downward, and they form elastic jaws e, which serve to secure the wringer to a washtub. These jaws are placed in an oblique position, and on their inner surfaces are secured pads f, of rubber, leather, or other suitable material, for the purpose of increasing their hold on the wash-tub.
In the example shown in the drawings the elastic jaws e of each standard are made of one and the same piece of spring-steel with the rings a, and are thus made as an article complete in themselves, ready to receive the boxes for the journals of the wringer-rollers.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is' 1. The combination, in a clothes-wringer, of two elastic rollers with two standards connected together by a traverse, each of said standards consisting of a ring, within which is arranged the set of boxes for the journals of the two rollers, the metal forming each ring being continued or extended downward, as shown, to form two elastic jawsio embracing the side of a tub, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the rings a, elastic rollers D, and boxes I) b, of set-screws 11, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of November, 187 7.
HAMILTON E. SMITH. [L. 8.] Witnesses:
W. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
