Specifieationforming part of Letters Patent No. 43,5'BS, dated July 1'2, 1864.

Be it known that I, D. H. SHEARER, of Drakesville, in the county of Davis and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-/Iashing'Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable other skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side sectional view of my invention, taken in theline r x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.

Similar Letters of reference indicate like This invention consists in the employment 4 or use of two oscillating rubbers placed within a suds-box provided with a dirt-chamber, all arranged and operating as hereinafter fully set forth, whereby clothes may be washed and thoroughly cleansed very expeditiously.

A represents the suds-box, which may be of any proper dimensions, constructed with two parallel sides, a c, ends b b, slightly inclined, and a bottom composed of two inclined pieces, c c, and a horizontal plate, d, of sheet metal. Copper or zinc would be a good material for the latter. The other partsof the box may be of wood. i This box may be supported by inclined legs c, and within the box there are secured two transversev boards, ff, slightly inclined downward toward a point over the center of the plate d, with a narrow space, g, between them. These boards f for-1n a dirtehamber, B, the space g being the communication between A and B, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. v

C is a shaft placed transversely on the box A and having a ily-wheel, D, on one end of it, and a crank, E, at about its center.

F is a rubber composed of two sides, h h, of segment form, and having uted slatsi secured at proper distances apart to their lower curved edges, said slats being iluted at their upper surfaces. This rubber F is provided with a journal, j, at each side of it, near its upper edge, said journals having their bearings c on the upper surfaces of the sides c a of the suds-bex A.

Gis a rubber which is fitted within the rubber F, and is constructed in a similar manner, with the exception that its slats l are fluted at their under surfaces. The rubber G is provided with a journal, m,at each side of it, said journals having their bearings in the bottoms of vertical grooves a, made in the inner sides of uprights o, at each side of the rubber F. The rubber F is operated by a pitman, H, from the crank E of the shaft C, and the rubber G is operated by a pitman, I, one end of which is connected to crank E, and the opposite end connected to an upright, J, secured in crossbars p in G. The pitman [is attached to the upright J above the plane of the journals m of G, while the pitman H of rubber F is attached to the latter, at one end of it, below the plane of its journalsj. By this arrangement it will be seen that when the shaft G is rotated an oscillating movement will be communicated to the two rubbers and thelatter move in opposite directions, the clothes being subjected to the necessary rubbing and friction between the slats or" the two rubbers. The suds-box A is provided with a requisite quantityof suds, and the dirt washed from the clothes settles down through the space g be tween the boards f f into chamber B, and there remains, being prevented from being driven or forced through the texture of the clothes, and the latter are therefore cleansed more rapidly and thoroughly than they otherwise would be.

I would remark that the rubber G may be raised or turned over in order to adjust the clothes on the slats of F and to remove them from it, and that a bar, I, may be secured on the bottom of A to prevent the suds from splashing up at the unoccupied side of the suds-box.

Havingr thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the two oscillating rubbers F G, the dirt chamber B, arranged within the suds-box A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
