IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,627, dated August 25, 1863.

To all whom it may concern:

Be :it known that I, ISAAC W. BOWERS, of Ovid Center, in the county of Clinton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Washing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention,taken in the line .fr or, Fig. `2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

This invention consists in the employment or use of a suds-box'provided with rounded ends, and having its bottom and ends covered by a series of rollers, the above partsl being used in connection with a rubber, which also is provided with rounded ends and rollers and a perforated top, all arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A represents the suds box of the machine, which is composed of two parallel sides, a a, and two rounded ends, b b, the form of the latter being shown clearly in Fig. 1. The sudsbox is supported at a suitable height by a proper framing, B.

Within the suds-box A there is fitted permanently a frame of rollers, the frame being composed of twoside strips or bars, o o, which extend the whole length of the suds-box, and are curved to Conform to the curved ends of the suds-box. These bars or strips abut snugly against the sides a a of' the suds-box, and between them rollers C are placedthe Journals of the latter being tted in the bars or strips, and allowed nto turn freely therein. These rollers are not in contact with each other, a small place being allowed between them.

D represents the rubber, which is composed of two side strips, d d, the ends of which are curved or rounded, as shown at e c, Fig. 1,v and connected bya board, f, which is perforated by a number of holes, g. The board f is nearly equal in width to the interior of the suds-box A, and to the upper `surface of f there are attached two inclined bars, g g', having a cross-bar or handle, h, at their outer ends. Between the two side strips d d there are placed a series of rollers, t', which may be of the same diameter as the rollers c, and placed at the same distance apart.

rIhe above-named parts constitute the washing-machine. The box A is supplied with a requisite quantity of suds, the clothes to be washed placed in it, and the rubber D placed on the clothes. The operator grasps the handle h of the rubber D, and moves it back and forth over the clothes, the flatter being -subjected to the necessary rubbing and friction between the rollers C of the box and the rollers t' of the rubber.

In consequence of having the suds boxAprovided with rounded ends, and also the side strips, d d, of the rubber D, the clothes will be subjected to a rubbing and friction at the ends of the suds-box, as Well as its bottom, and the clothes Will not be liable to be injured, as they would be if forced and compressed into the angles and against the ends of a square box;

In consequence of admitting of the free passage or escape of the suds the clothes are acted upon more eftciently than they otherwise would be, the rubber cannot be buoyed up by the suds, as would be the case to a greater or less extent Were a solid or unperforated board, j', employed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The suds box A, provided with rounded ends and with rollers C, as described, in combination with the rubber D, provided with rollers t', tted between side strips, d d, having rounded ends, and also provided with a perforated top board, f, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
