WASHING-MACHINE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,595, dated December 19, 1865.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that l, D. KELLOGG, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Washing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line .fr w, Fig. 2; Fig. 2,

This invention consists in the employment or use of an inclined bed of rollers in connection with a reciprocating rubber composed of a frame provided with rotating shafts having upon them a series of elastic rings, all being constructed and arranged to operate as hereinafter set forth, whereby clothes may be washed in a perfect manner and without i11- jury.

A represents a suds-box the bottom a of which is inclined, and is supported by legs b at any suitable or desired height; and B represents a series of elastic rollers placed transversely in the suds-box a short distance above its bottom a. These rollers may be constructed of wood covered with india-rubber, and they are allowed to turn freely in their bearings. rlhese rollers B constitute the bed on which the clothes are washed.

C represents the rubber, composed of a rectangular frame having a series of rollers, b', placed transversely in it, on each of which a .series of elastic rings, c, are placed. These rollers are allowed to turn freely in the frame of the rubber, and the rings c are allowedto turn on the rollers.

The rubber-frame has a bar, D, attached transversely to its inner end. The ends of said bar are curved upward, and they are fitted in grooves d in the sides of the box A, said grooves being about parallel with the bed of rollers B. The under surfaces of the end pieces, e e, of the rubber-frame are iiuted or corrugated, as shown in Fig. 1, in order to catch the clothes and cause the same to be moved up or down on the bed of rollers, as may be desired.

The outer end of the rubber is provided with a handle, E, by which it is operated.

The box is supplied with a requisite quantity of suds, and the clothes to be Washed placed upon the bed of rollers B and the rubber C moved back and forth by hand over the clothes. Where there is sufficient pressure the rings c will turn on the rollers b'. lf the pressure is light the rollers b will turn. The pressure of the rubber on the clothes may be regulated as desired by the operator, the bar D, which may have a certain degree of elasticity, keeping the inner end of the rubber down upon the clothes, while the pressure atthe outer end is given by the operator exerting a greater or less degree of force downward.

The corrugated end pieces, e e, admit of the clothes being moved up or down on the bed of rollers B, as may be desired,in order to change their position, and the Water or suds, in consequence of the bed of rollers B bein g a trifle above the bottom a. of the suds-boX, is allowed to pass through saidbed or between the rollers thereof, and hence it readily passes through n the texture of the clothes and cleanses the same.

Heavy and light clothes may be washed by this machine with equal facility and without danger of being injured, and a wringing-machine, E, may be attached to the suds-box in order to admit of the clothes, after being washed, being drawn through it direct from the suds-boX.

Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The inclined bed of rollers B, placed within a suds-boX, A, provided with an inclined bottom, a, in connection with the rubber C, provided with rollers b', and having elastic rings c fitted on them, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. The combination of the rollers b b', corrugated end pieces, e e, transverse bar D, and grooves d, as and for the purposes described.
