Description
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE` ALONZO W. INGALLS, OF BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,656, dated August 25, 1863.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALONZO W. INGALLS, of Buchanan, Berrieu county, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful washing-machine to be used for the purpose of washing all kinds ot clothing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making' a part of this specification. Y
b b is a board with a plane surface attached to a frame, F F, like a common wash-board. d. d is a self-acting clothes-holder, the endV of the piece to be washed being placed between it and the upper end of the board b b. The holder d d is held against it by the spiral springs e e. a a is a bristle-brush attached to the cross-roller t', so as to allow the brush to swing o ver the plain board b b, upon which the fabric to be washed is to be placed. The brush a a is kept up from the clothes by the springs 7c k, placed underneath the journals of the roller iin the upright standards g g, and is brought down onto the clothes at pleasure with the hand of the operator` who works the brush on the clothes or thing to be washed by the handle h hf.
In using the machine it is to be placed in a tub like a common wash-board, with the ordinary quantity of soap and water, and the article to be washed is to be placed on the board under the brush with one end over the upper end of the board, so as to be held by the clothes-holder. Then the operator swings the brush over the board with his or her hand, pressing it down on the cloth at pleasure, letting the brush frequently pass down into the water in the tub, and so continue unt1l all dirt is removed by the brush.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the vibratory brush a a, plane wash-board b b, and springs It k, for holding the brush away from the wash-board, substantially as and fort-he purpose herein specified.
2. The clothesholder d d, with its springs e e, in combination with the wash-board and rubber or brush, as herein set i'orth.
S. BISHOP, GEO. F. HEMINGWAY.
