Description
E'. 5 so F UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
JOSIAH S. POND, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,302, dated May 15, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .IosIAH S. POND, of the city of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rubbing Boards and Machinery for lVashings Cloths, and the following is a clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure l, represents a top plan, (the rollers in red lines.) Fig. 2, is the fluted roller. Fig. 3, shows an end view of rubbing board and roller, in position, detached.
The nature of my invention consists, in the construction, and arrangement o-f a compound rubbing-board for cleansing cloths, being made with a series of alternate ridges and rollers, to compress and rub at the same time, by the combined action of fluted rollers, or any equivalent device.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and the letters marked thereon.
A, A, as seen in Figs. 1 and 8, is made of a hard wood plank, having a slight hollow, or concave longitudinally on the top, or working side, and is beveled off on both edges, leaving elevations (el, d) on each side of the concave. Between these points are a series of hollows or grooves (e, e, e, 6,) into which long rollers (a, a, a, a,) as seen in red lines in Fig. l, are placed so as to be the same height of the stationary ridges (c, c, c, 0,) thereby forming a series of alternate ridges and rollers, upon which the cloths are brought to bear, while in the process of being cleansed.
The fluted roller, or rubber (B,) as seen in Fig. 2, may be made of hard clean wood, or of corrugated Zinc plate, and may be placed in position to act upon the cloths in combination with the rubbing-board, by any of the usual modes, so as to perform the function of feeding in, and working the cloths, on the ridges, and rollers, thereby causing compressing and rubbing 'at the same time, and the process may be brought to bear upon any place, or part of a garment, and continued, till every portion is thoroughly cleansed.
Upon both edges of the board (A) are parallel rollers (C, C,) to aid and facilitate the moving of heavy wet cloths, by relieving them from friction on the edges,
while passing from the suds to the rubbing surfaces.
The cleansing of garments by the application of water and soap, and rubbing the parts soiled, is known to be among the first improvements of the human species,-the necessity of such an institution, was no doubt discovered, soon after that period in the worlds history, when textile fabrics were substituted in the place of the coats of skin which the Lord God, made to cloathe the man and the woman who discovered that they were naked, and were ashamed and were subsequently driven out of Eden to till the ground, and multiply and replenish the earth,-the history of ancient E pt, has furnished numerous illustrations o the mode of making fine twined linen and other textile fabrics,-as also the mode of cleansing garments, etc.
Art, and science, have long since established the fact, that alternate rubbing and compressing, are the most efficient agents in washing and cleansing soiled garments, and a vast amount of skill and labor, have been expended for the last half century to devise the simplest and best mode to accomplish that objectso as to relieve the fair daughters of Eve from the cruel bondage of devoting one fifth, or sixth of their time over the wash-tub.
By my improvements, as herein described it will readily be seen, that I accomplish the desired object, (viz,) that of rubbing and compressing, in about equal proportions at the same time, and by the most simple and l efficient means, dirty streaks, in wristbands and shirt collars are all eifectually cleaned, and with as little wear, and liability to tear off buttons, as by being washed by the hands.
Having thus fully described my invention and its operation, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is* l. |I`he construction, and arrangement of a compound rubbing-board, having a series of alternate ridges, and rollers, to compress, and rub at the same time as herein de scribed, for the purposes specified.
2. I claim the compound rubbing-board, in combination with a iiuted roller, or its equivalent as set forth.
JOSIAI-I S. POND.
