(ModeL) A. R. STEELSMITH.
Washing Machine.
No. 236,642. Patented Jan.- 11, I881.
WITNESSES INVENTOR N. PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPMER. WASHINGTON, D C
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS R. STEELSMITH, OF FARMER, OHIO.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,64=2, dated January 11, 1881.
' Application filed October 2,1880. (Model) To all whom itmay concern Be it known that I, AMos R. S'rEELsMnrH, of Farmer,in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in VVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Figs. 3 and 4 are details.
This invention relates to that class of devices entitled washing-machines; audit consists in the construction hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A is the tub, having sides B B and ends O O, and supported upon legs D.
Midway ofthe tub, and supported in standards F F, is the shaft E, having handle 6. One journal, 6, of this shaft is inserted in hole f of standard F, and the other, e, is slipped in slotf of standard F, and held there by latch G.
Fast-ened to the middle of shaft E is the strap 6', to the ends of which is fastened the washer 11, made of a back, h, and face-plate It. On said face-plate it there is a groove, h, in which is fastened, by the removable wire I, a rubber strip, K. This face-plate h, with the rubber K, has a curved surface. At one end of the bottom of the tube is placed a board, L, at each end of which there is a spiral spring, M. Attached to and resting upon each of said springs is a spring-bar, N, which extends downward from the spring and has its other and lower end fastened to the side of the tub, being kept from immediate contact by a strip, P. The tops of the bars N are recessed for a portion of their lengths, forming shoulders at n. Below shoulders n are latches R adapted to extend over said shoulders at along the top of the bar. On the inside of the bar, at shoulders a, there are pivoted buttons S, having the groove 8, and with their stem portions extending slightly beyond the shoulders n. The upward movement of these buttons is limited by pins 8. These buttons have holes 8, and in the holes 8 are inserted the journals of a roller, T. The roller T is a feed-roll, over which the clothes pass onto the wash-board, and is intended to prevent the clothes from being worn by the upper edge of the wash-board.
W represents a wash-board of any suitable kind.
In using this device the washer H is turned out of the way and the latches R are turned to one side and the board W is put in place, with the upper ends of its side pieces resting against shoulders at and its upper edge hearing in the grooves s of buttons S, the lower ends of its side pieces resting against shoulders n. The latches R are then turned in place and the washer H turned down, when the device is ready for use. The operator takes cranked handle 0 with one hand and feeds the clothes over roller T with the other. The clothes are caught between the washer H and board W, and by giving the shaft E a rocking motion the clothes are rubbed between the washer and board. The springiness given to said board allows for difl'erence in the thickness of goods, and by turning the shaft and washer completely around ditferent portions of the articles are brought between said washer and the board.
By the construction of the recessed springbars and latches the boards can be removed when worn, and any kind of board can be used by a little fitting. VVheu the rubber is worn it can be removed by taking out the Wire I and a new piece substituted, the screw 2' simply being withdrawn from the loop t" in the wire I.
What I claim is- In 'a washing-machine, the combination of the recessed bars N N, having shoulders at n, pivoted at one end to the cleats P P, and springs M M, with the wash-board W, latches R R, buttons S S, having grooves s s, and feed-roll T, constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
AMOS It. STEELSMI'IH.
