UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SAMUEL COOK, OF LITTLE VALLEY, NEW YORK.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,914, dated May 3, 1892. Application filed September 2l, 1891. Serial No. 406,394. (No model.)
To all whom t may concerni- Be it known that I, SAMUEL COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Valley, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and useful WashingMachine, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in washing-machines.
The objectJ of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of washing-machines an d toprovideoneby which clothes may be rapidly washed without injury to them and with little laboron the part ot' the operator.
The invention consists in the construction Vand novel combination and arrangement of Fig. 5 is a detail View of oneof the fasteners.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a Washing-machine body or tub, having secured to and arranged on its inner faces a series of ribs forming rubbingsurfaces, and the said body is provided at diametrically-opposite points on its upper edge with fasteners 3, adapted toV secure a cover 4 to the body or tub. The cover 4 is provided with a central opening 5 and has secured across it a strip 6, provided at its ends with projections 7, arranged to be engaged by the fasteners 3. The fasteners 3 each consists of a block or plate S, secured to the tub and having its upper end provided with a recess or bifurcation 9 to receive one of the projections 7, and a spring l0, arranged on the outer face of the plate or block 8 and having its lower end secured thereto and having its upper end beveled on its inner face and provided with a shoulder 1l. The'outerends of the proj eotions 7 are beveled and are adapted to engage the beveled faces of the springs 10 to force the latter outward sufficiently to allow them to engage the shoulders 11 whereby the cover is secured to the tub or body.
In the central opening of the cover is ar ranged a stem 12, provided .at its upperw end with a handle 13 and carrying at its lower end a follower or rubber 14, provided on its lower face with ribs forming a rubbing-surface. The follower or rubber is forced down upon the clothes and is reversely oscillated or partially rotated, and thereby exerts an action upon the clothes similar to rubbing by hand, `whereby clothes are quickly washed without injury to them. The stern is journaled in the central opening of the cover and in an elevated bearing-block 15, having a central opening 16 and supported by inclined brace-rods 17, the ends of which are flattened, bent at an angle, and provided with perforations. The lower ends of the braces are fastened to the ends of the strip 6 and to the outer ends of short strips 18, secured to the upper face of the cover and arranged at right angles to the strip 6 and the upper ends of the bracerods and secured to the sides of the elevated bearing-block.
It will readily be seen that the .washingmachine is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and adapted to quickly wash clothes without injuring them and with little labor on the part of the operator.
What I claim is- The combination, with a washing-machine body, of a cover wholly removable therefrom, provided with a cleat arranged on its upper face and having the ends reduced to form tenons, the slotted plates secured to the body at diametrically-opposite sides and projecting above the edge of the body and adapted to receive the said tenons and the shoulders, and spring-catches adapted to engage the tenons of the cleat, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL COOK.
