Description

UNITED STATES ArENr Erica.
GEORGE F. S. ZIMMERMAN, OF FREDERICK, MARYLAND.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
To all whom, it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. S. ZIMMER- MAN, of Frederick, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tub Washing- Machines 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompan yin g drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the Washing apparatus arranged in a common wash-tub, and showing in red lines the rubber and its hinged frame as raised up and thrown back, so that the concave may be used for ordinary hand-washing, as with a wash-board. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section through the tub and washing apparatus.
Similar letters of reference in both the gures refer to like parts ofthe apparatus.
Several forms of washin g devices have heretofore been made and patented which were designed to be used in an ordinary wash-tub. I lay no claim' to any general principle that may be involved in such washing apparatus.
My invention consists in the hinging ofthe frame that carries the rubber to the stationary frame that stands in the ordinary tub, so that the pressure upon the clothes being washed may be regulated, the rubber thrown back to place, or remove the clothes, or to adapt the machine to hand-washing, as by a common hand-board, as may be desired.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same by reference to the drawings.
A represents an ordinary hand-tub, in which the washing apparatus B stands, and from which it may be readily removed. This washing apparatus is composed of the side pieces, a, and supports b, together with a ribbed or iuted concave, c, which forms the under or stationary portion of the apparatus, and a gallows frame, d, hinged to the supports b at the point e, said gallows-frame carrying a rocking rubber, f, furnished with a ribbed or luted surface, g, and a handle, h, and these constitute the moving parts ofthe washing apparatus. The tub holds the apparatus firmly without fastenings, and when the clothes are to be washed the rnbberf is raised up to properly place them, and thewater having been thrown in, the operator, with one hand upon the frame d, regulates the necessary presssure, while with the other the rubber f is worked to wash the clothes. Should it be necessary to use the concave c as an ordinary hand wash-board, it is only necessary to throw back the frame d, as shown in red in Fig. 1, and then there remains the common tub and hand-board, so that machine or hand washing either may be done in the tub.
I am aware that a removable washing apparatus has heretot'ore been applied to a common hand wash-tub. rIhis I do not claim; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, in a washing apparatus that is to be set and used in acommon wash-tub, is-
'lhe hinging of the frame d, that carries the rubber j', to the stationary or under portion, b, for the purpose and in the manner herein described and represented.
GEO. F. S. ZIMMERMAN.
