UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. HENDERSON, OF vKEOKUK, IOWA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,927, dated May 7, 1889.
' Application flied December 10,1888. seria No. 293,152. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. HENDERSON, of Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, a citizen of the United States, have in-V vented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, which is made and used substantially as set forth hereinafter, and as shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is an elevation of the apparatus, a part of the tub being broken away to show inner parts.
The object of this invention is to form a simple, cheap, and practical Washing-machine, which can be easily operated without complex machinery, and which can be easily and quickly transformed into either a tub or inachine. The invention consists in several parts and features of arrangement, substantially as set forth.
The tub B is of simple ordinary construction. It is provided with ribs D von its bottom suitably arranged for rubbing clothing to be washed. It has a central tube, C, projecting up through its bottom, With a flange and bolts below for attachment and packing to prevent leakage; and it has handles E of ordinary form on opposite sides and a handle, F, projecting from one side adapt-ed for turning the tub by.
The frame A has a head centrally on top, with legs G projecting for its support, and suitably braced. It has a central shaft, H, projecting up from its top or head to enter the tube C of the tub B. The upper end of v this shaft is square to hold a slide, I, above the tube C and keep it from turning with the tub. The lower end of shaft H is round, and it and the top of the head of frame A are arranged to form bearings for the end of tube C and the tub to turn on.
The rubber head K has suitable rubbingribs on its under side and 'arms L arched up holding the slide I above on shaft H and adapted to be used as handles by the operator.
The tub B may be used as an ordinary washtub in the preparatory and nishing stages of Washing, either mounted on the supportA or separate from it, and a cork or other means of preventing the Water running out by the tube C may be used when needed.
When the clothing has been prepared for rubbing, the tub is mounted on its support, as shown, With the -clothing and a suitable quantity of suds therein, and the rubber head K is put in on top with its slide I on shaft H. The tub is then turned `back and forth or round and lround by handle F, While the head K. is held fixed on the top of the clothing with suitable pressure by handlesL until the clothing has been suitably rubbed. During this operation the head K is held from turning by the square shaft H in its slide I, and it is allowed to rise and fall by the slide moving on the shaft. The head K may be lifted from time to time for turning and adjusting the clothing` for the proper treatment.
Various modifications may be made.
I claim-- 1. The tub B, provided with a projecting handle, F, a series of ribs on its bottom, and a central tube, C, in combination with a support, A, having a shaft, H, squared along its upper part to prevent a slide turning thereon, and a rubber head, K, provided with ribs below and with handles L and a slide, I, above mounted on shaft H, so as to slide Without turning.
2. The tub B, provided with a'central vertical tube, O, and having handle F, in combination with a support and shaft, H, to t in said tube, and with a floating rubber, K,.held by said shaft and adapted to hold it while the tub is rotated to Wash clothing under said rubber, substantially as set forth.
YJOI-IN G. HENDERSON.`
