UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BANNER, or CANTON, OHIO.
IMPROVED TUB wAsHlNe-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 1,165, dated September 13,1864.
To all 072.01111 it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DANNER, of Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and uset'ul Improvement 'i Tub Vashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
had to the accompanying drawings, makinga p lrt of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation ot one of t the tubs, showing in dotted lines one of the i hinged sections of the cover as raised up. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section through the tub, and showing the position of the hinged sections of t-he cover when the rub- Similar letters of reference, whele they occur in the separate figures, denote like parts in bot-h drawings.
My invention consists in forming the cover oi' the tub in three sections, two ot' which are hinged to each other and to the third one, which is permanent, so that one section may be raised to arrange the clothes in the tub anl the two sections'thrown back so as to carry back with them the rubber, its shaft, and crank, that the whole interior ot' the tub may be cleared. f
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use Iny invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A represents a tub ot' any ordinary construction, and having cnc section, B, ot' its cover permanently fastened thereto, and by permanent I mean pernmnent during the Ope ation of the machine, tor it may be removaIle and replaceable by pins, hooks, or Otherwise if so preferred. Io the section B is hinged, as at a, the middle section, C, which supports and steadies and Inakes a bearing for the shaft D, that carries at its one end a crank, E, and at its opposite end a rubbingboard, F, of any suitable style, shape, or pattern, and to the section C is hinged, asat c,
the third section, G, said sections B C G, when shut down horizontally, forming the entire cover to the tub.
In washing, the clothes often ride upand require straightening` out. To get at the interior of the tub for this purpose, thelhinged section G is swung back, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, which enables the operator to gain access to the clothes. When the clothes are washed and are to be removed, when the whole interior of the tub must be cleared ot' the rubber and its shaft. For this purpose the rubber and its shaft may be raised up Vertr cally, the section G thrown back, and then the section O, with the rubber, shaft, Ste., also thrown back, and when this is done the several parts will be in the position shown in Fig. 2, and the entire tub clear and easy of access. It' it is desirable to do so, gearing may be introduced between the crank E and the rubberF to give the latter more. speed, but this will not prevent the free rising up kOt' the rubber and the swinging back of the sections and the rubber, as above shown and described.
l am aware that many rubbers have been so made as to swing out oi' the tub; but I am not aware that a cover and rubber have been so swung back as I propose.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of Iny invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Incombination withaI tub washingmachine, a cover for supporting, guiding, or admitting the rubbing board stem or shaft to pass through, said cover being in three sections, two ot' which shall be hinged and the third rigid, and so that the rubbing-board Willswing upward and backward with one of said sections, substantially as and for the purpose described.
