Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. W. MUDGE, OF ROME, NEW YORK.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,081, dated September 18, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. W. MUDGE, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-'Washing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention, cc, w, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. Q a horizontal section of the same taken in the plane y, y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a tub or case which may be of inverted conical or cylindrical form and of any suitable dimensions, and B, is a vertical shaft which is placed centrally within the tub or case and stepped in its bottom as shown at a. This shaft B, has a beater C, attached to it. This beater is comprised of a disk or wheel Z), which is attached to the shaft B, as shown at c, Fig l, and has a series of slats (Z, attached to its rim, at a suitable distance apart. These slats (Z, are rounded at their inner sides as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and at their upper ends they are attached to a rim e. The slats CZ, if a conical tub or case is used, are inclined to correspond with it, the slats being quite close to the side of the tub.
On the shaft B, there is placed loosely a cylinder D, which has vertical slats f, attached to its periphery the outer edge of said slats being rounded similar to the slats (Z, of beater C.
To the bottom of cylinder D, there is attached a circular disk g, which tits within the rim of the disk or wheel of beater C, and to the upper surface of the disk g, there are secured radial slats h.
On the upper end of the cylinder D, there is placed a bevel wheel 2', which as well as the cylinder D, is allowed to turn freely on the shaft B, and on the shaft B, which extends some distance above the top of the tub or case there is secured a similar wheel j. The cylinder D, comprises the other beater of the device.
E, is a spur wheel which gears into the wheels c', y', as shown in Fig. l. The wheel E, is secured to a horizontal shaft F, the bearings of which are attached to a bedpiece Z, fitted on the top of the tub or case.
From the above description it will be seen that by rotating the shaft F, the two beaters C, D, will be rotated in opposite directions. The clothesto be washed are placed. between the two beaters which act upon the suds placed in the tub and cause the suds to permeate or pass through the texture of the clothes thoroughly cleansing them after being acted upon a short time. The slatted disk g, creates a current of suds below the clothes and this current has a tendency to buoy the clothes up and act upon their lower parts. The clothes in consequence of the reverse movement of the beaters are not materially acted upon so far as any rubbing process is concerned they remain nearly stationary between the beaters.
I am aware that rotary beaters have been previously used in clothes washing machines, but I am not aware that any have ever been arranged to operate as herein described to effect the result specified. For instance, rotary beaters have been used in connection with a rotary case, but, the action of such a device is different from mine with its stationary case. I am aware also that a stationary case has been used in connection with one rotary beater in this the action is entirely different the clothes being subjected to a decided rubbing action.
I do not claim broadly or in the abstract, the employment or use in clothes-washing machines of rotary beaters, but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the Open rotary slatted beater C, shaft B, and pinion y', with the central hollow rotating beater D, rotating disk g, pinion z', and driver E, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
S. V. MUDGE.
Tit-nesses Ii. E. ELMER, H. M. LAw'roN.
