WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION 4forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,343, dated July 24, 1 894. Application filed January 12, 1893- Serial No. 45811.35. (No model.)
.To all whom t mag/concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE 0. M. HABERh ACKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the countyof Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Cylinder Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in Washing machines.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of that class of washing machines employing rotary washing cylspending inders, by enabling the body of the machine to be readily detached and removed from the stand to permit a separation of the parts for storing, or to enable the body or suds box to be used elsewhere.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and. pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a Washing machine provided with myimprovements, the cover being removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the washing machine. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View showing the pivoted hook.
Like numerals of reference indicate correparts in all the iigures of the drawings.
1 designates a Washing machine body or suds box, detachably mounted upon a supporting frame 2, and provided with a cover 3, and having rotatively mounted in it a Washing cylinder 4, adapted to contain the clothes to be Washed. The body -is prevented from leaking at' the upper edges by packing strips 1 of rubber or other suitable material.
The cylinder 4 is detachably journaled in bearings of the body, and one of the journals is extended through one of the sides thereof and squared to receive a crank handle. The other journal is detachably secured in its bearing by a pivoted button 4a; a packing ring 5a is arranged around the longer journal to prevent the escape of water. This Washing cylinder is preferably constructed of sheet metal; it has bulged sides 5, which cause it to taper gradually toward the periphery, and it is provided on its inner faces with protuberances 7 around which are perforations 6. The periphery of the cylinder is composed of curved plates 8 having inwardly extending ends 9 forming openings, which are covered by screens 10. The curved plates are also provided with protuberances 12. The cylinder has a hin ged` door or section 13, which is secured when closed by a catch 14, and which is supported when open by a link 15.
The supporting frame is composed of crossed legs 18 connected at their lower portions by cross-bars 19 and at their upper ends with inclined boards 20, thereby forming a horse, the upper portion of which conforms to the configuration of the body or suds box. The supporting frame is also adapted to receive the cover of the washing machine body, when the cover is in an inverted position, to form a tub or receptacle.
The washing machine body is detachably secured upon the supporting frame by rigid hooks 21, engaging projections 22 of the adjacent legs of the supporting frame, and by pivoted hooks 23 engaging similar projections 24 and provided with knobs 25, whereby they may be turned out of engagement With the legs to enable the washing machine body to be removed.
lt will be apparent that' the washing machine body or suds box may be readily detached from the stand for use elsewhere or for packing, and that when the body has been ,of the advantages of the invention.
In a Washing machine, the combinationfof a supporting frame having crossed legs provided at their upper ends with projections, a washing machine body detachably mounted on the supporting frame and fitting in the upi per portion thereof, the rigid hooks secured to my own I have hereto affixed my signature in oposite sides or; the body at one end thereof the presence of two Witnesses. an engaging t e adjacent projections, and l 1 the pivoted hooks located at the other end of EUGENE o' M HABERACKBR' 5 the body and arranged to engage the adjacent Witnesses:
projections, substantially as described. H. T. HARPHAM, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as GEO. HARPHAM.
