IMP-ROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
DANIEL DISHAR'I, OF CANTON, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 59,897, dated November 20, 1866.
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Beit known that I, DANIEL DIsHART, of Canton, in the county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Washing-Machines? and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. y
In the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, A represents the wash tub, which is an oblong box provided with suitable legs, as shown. This box has a lid, d, and a receptacle at the rear end b, to keep the clothes or attach the wringing-rnachine, which the lid d does'not cover. B B represent two wash-boards which lie horizontally in the box, A, one upon the other, with the convert zines of each board facing each other. These boards B are attached to an eccentric-crooked shaft, F, (see tige. 2 and 3,) which extends across the inside of one end of the box A,` bysuitable arms D. F represents a cog-wheel resting upon suitable bearings on the outside of box A, and provided with a crank I. This wheel F meshes into a smaller cog-wheel II,which is permanently secured to the outer end of the shaft F. C represents a metallic slide, which is placed in openings made in the lid, cl, at about the centre of said lid, and is provided with a horizontal spring, g, made in the form shown. This slide is raised or lowered in the wash tub by a vertical screw k, with.. crank f, so that the clothes may be pressed close together between the boards, said spring g resting upon the upper side of the topmost board when in operation. a represents a strip of India-rubber packing, which is placed in a small gutter' made in the upperedge ofthe box A, and extending slightly above said edge, so that when the lid-d is pressed down the steam is kept within the box, and materially assists in cleansing the clothes placed therein. M is a T-shaped support, attached to an end of the box A, by means of the keepers o o, for the purpose of steadying the machine when in use, and supporting the lid d when thrown open. It will be seen, by turning the crank I, that the wheel F turns the crank-wheel H, and works the eccentric crank E, so that the boards B B work in opposite directions, and thoroughly cleanse the clothing placed between them, and the steam is kept in the box by means of the lid and packing heretofore referred to.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is
I. I claim the adj ustableslide, C, with. spring attached, in combination with the boards, B B, as and for the purposes specilied. i
2. The support m, and receptacle b, in combination with the box A, and hinged cover, the whole being arranged and operatingsubstantially as herein specied. p v A As evidence that I claim the foregoing, I` have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
' DANIEL DISHART.
