Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY SIBLE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
IMPRovi-:D WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 55,144, dated September 18, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SIDLE, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part ot' this specitication, A represents the body of the machine, which consists of a square or slightly oblong box, made in a neat and substantial manner, and supported upon legs.
B B represent rollers, which stan d vertically in the box and close to the sides of said box. These rollers have their lower bearings in the bottom of the box and their upper bearings 4 in cleats secured to the sides of the box.
O represents the cover or lid ofthe machine, which said cover is hinged, as shown, to one end of the box. This lid or cover extends over a little more than two-thirds of the box, and there tits down close to a stationary board or ledge, D, which forms a portion ofthe top.
E represents a shat'twhich passes down into the box through the center of cover O. This shaftis provided above the cover with a crank,
by means of which it is rotated, and below the cover with a series of arms, which are marked F F, and which pass through said shaft obliquely.
Two of the legs of the machine passup above the top of the box, and are beveled oft', so as to support the cover or lid when it is turned back.
This machine does not wash clothes upon the bottom ofthe box alone, but along the sides and ends.
The clothes to be washed are placed in the box and the lid shut down, and by revolving the shaft E the oblique arms F F move the clothes around the box, and, pressing and rubbin g them against the rollers B B and mixing` them up or turning them over and over, serve to cleanse them of all dirt or impurities.
This machine does not wash so much by rnbbing as it does by agitation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The box A, with its vertical rollers B B, arranged with the top O and shaft E, with its oblique arms F F, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the. presence ot' witnesses. Y
C. M. ALExANDER, JNO. D. PAT'IEN.
