Description

D. ALDRIGH. Washing-Machine.
Ml 5m05.- @2Q/MLM jaw-zama N.PETER,S. PNOTO-LITMOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVIS ALDRICH, OF BLANDINSVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,425, dated May 20, 1879; application filed June 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, DAVIS ALDRIGH, of Blandinsville, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, `have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVashing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The figure shows a vertical section of my device, the dotted lines showing` the rubbing'- board in position for hand use.
This invention relates to washing-machines; and consistsv in a rubbing-board capable of being used in the tub or turned up and used as a hand-board, and in the attendant mechanism necessary to such additional use.
B indicates the tub, which has a lid, G; The tub is provided with a center pivot-post, H, which passes through the bottom of `the tub, and is held securely by means ofthe under plate, H.
0n the post H is placed the hollow shaft F, which has a handle, I, at the top, above the lid G, and at the bottom the rubbing-board E, above which are placed the Weights U, whose use is apparent.
The rubbing-board E has ribs on its under surface, answering,` the usual purpose in such cases, and is turned by means of the handle I.
The tub has a stationary rubbing-board, D,
over its bottom, with ribs on its upper surface.
The lid G has, necessarily, an aperture in the centerlarge enough to allow the pivot-post and the shaft F to pass through it.
The rotary rubbing-board E may be taken out and turned up to be used for hand-wash ing. To do this the shaft F is attached to the arm K, which has open jaws to receive it, and is provided with the screw K", to clamp the jaws upon the shaft a-nd secure it at any desired angle or position. The arm K is attached to the tub" at K'.
The operation kof my device is simply this: The clothes to be washed are placed under the rotary rubbing-board E, which is then turned by means of the handle I.
If it is desired to wash particular articles or parts by hand, the board E is turned up, and the shaft F secured to the arm K, and it is then ready for washing by hand.
I claim- 1. The tub B andthe detachable rubbingboard E, having` the shaft F, in combination with the arm K, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The Washing-machine consisting of the tub B, the stationary rubbing-board D, the pivot-shaft H, the rotary and detachable rubbing-board E, the hollow-shaft F, the handle I, the weights U, and the arm K, as and for the purpose set forth.
" DAVIS ALDRICH. l
