Description

A. c. WADE.
Churn;
- Patented Aug. 7, 1866.
Invenfar:
vf \v a'iweesesx I 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFEIcE,
ALEXFG. WADE, OF PARIS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEO. THILMAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,051, dated August 7, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER O. WADE, of Paris,Edg-ar county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Imp'rm'ements in Ghurns; and Ldo hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of thisspecification. 7 v i The object of. this invention isto provide a simple, cheap, and effective churn, which can.
be operated inxthe most convenient; manner, and the working parts being; so arranged as to permit of their removal in a few moments forthe purpose cf cleaning, 85c.
In the accompanying drawing, which is a transverse vertical section of a churnembodying my improvements, A represents the tub,
which consists of a rectangular vessel having a concave bottom, B, and supported on feet G G. D is the lid, provided with a slot, E, and said lid is attached to the tub A by means of the buttons dd. g
' The under partjot the lid is provided with downwardly-projecting shoulders F F, which bear against the inner vertical sides of the tub A, and said shoulders have attached to them the cleat G, which aifords journal-bearings for the rock-shaft H of the double-winged dasher l.
' The dasher I is composed of two Wings, J and K, which arepro vided witha number of dashboards, jj and 70k.
L is a removable frame, whose ends are connected together by the deflecting-boards NN and the longitudinal rails 00 O", which di vide the vessel A in" two equal parts, but at the same time permit a constant and thorough circulation of the cream from one end to the other of said vessel. .Pis the lever by which the rock-shaft H and its double-winged dasher I are operated. Operation: The leverP being depressed, as
. bottom of the vessel.
shown in the drawing, causes the rock-shaft H to turn in its bearings, by which act the wing K of the dasher I is advancedtoward the rails O O O carr in the cream alon with it. The cream passes through the interstices between the rails O OODand the dash boa-rdsjj, and, after striking againstthe deflecting-board N it falls back into the concave As the lever is elevated the wing J acts on the cream in precisely the same manner, and this alternate elevation and depression of the lever produces the most thorough and complete agitation and circulation of the cream, by which means butter of the most superior quality is produced in a very few minutes.
This mode of operating the dasher by means of the lever P enables a person to sit down while churning, so that invalids and aged persons can perform as much work as the ablebodied with the old kind of churns.
WVhen a sufficient quantity of butter has been produced the churn can be readily cleansed. To do this it is only necessary to turn the buttons 01 d, so as to enable the lid 1), with its annexed rook-shaft H and dasher I, to be disconnected from the box A, after whichthe removable frame L is lifted out, and having been scalded, they are as easily replaced in their previous position.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- The double-winged beater I J K, journaled to the lid D,as described, in combination with the removable frame L and its accessories N N O O 0, all arranged and operating as explained and set forth. i
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
ALEXANDER G. VADE. Witnesses:
Gno. THrLMAN, GEO. DOLE.
