Description
tant
@that l' AUGUSTUS DAY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
Lette/rs Patent No. 89,385, dated A11/ril 27, 1869.
WASH-BOILER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making 'part of the same. h
To whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, AUGUSTUS DAY, of'Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented` a new and useful Improvement in Clothes- W'ashing Boilers, and I do declare that the following is a' true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my boiler with cover removed. l
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional representation of the cover.
Figure 3 is a representation of the interior apparatus.
Figure 4 is a view of one of the loose ends.
Like letters indicate like parts in eachgure.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvementl in that class of boilers in which the cleansing of the garments is performed by the currents of hot suds.
circulating in steady currents from the bottom lupward through proper channels, and then downward through the clothes. Y
The invention consists in a loose convex, perforated or slatted false bottom, and in loose plates, extending from the bottom of the boiler nearly to theY top.
These plates are designed to stand vertically in the ends of the boiler in such a manner as to convert these ends into channels, through which the water circulates. v
It also consists in placing fillets in the ends of the cover, so that they will, when the cover is in position, be immediately over the top of said channels, and which act to turn the water over the clothes.
A, in the drawings, represents a boiler of the ordinary construction, into the bottom of which is placed the loosely-fitting perforated or slatted convex bottom B.
to the under side of the cover E; and by .these fillets a direction is given to the currents of water toward the centre of the boiler, where it spreads over the clothes, and, percolating through them, carries the dirt with it to the bottom of the boiler, whence the' water is again conducted to the top, and the operation continued as long as may be necessary to complete the cleansing process.
The clothes occupy the chamber above the false bottom, and between the plates O.'
To operate the apparatus, Water should be placed in the bottom, sncient to cover the false bottom, and the clothes then placed in the boiler with a vsniicient amount of soap' or other detergent. When the Water commences to boil, vthe same will rise through the channels and flow over the clothes in the manner described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to securev by Letters Patent, is-
-The wash-boiler described, consisting of the boi-1er A, convex perforated false bottom B, end plates O, and cover F, with llets D, the lWhole being combined as described, for the purpose set forth.
AUGUSTUS DAY.
